  2. @Dave interested in a cost comparison between renting and transporting across the pond, specifically when the break even point is (ignoring buying and selling the bike itself obvs).

  3. I did similar to you but a slightly different route, few pics here https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/royal-enfield-350-bullet.97844/

Youre spot on the Enfield is the only bike you want to ride out there and maybe not for everyone, but i loved the sound of the single.

    Harley Davidsons, not so much.

  5. I’ve done quite a bit of both and the rule of thumb is that transporting your bike is generally cheaper than hiring if the trip is 3 weeks or more. There are exceptions of course, like Iceland, where hiring is so expensive that it is worth paying to get your own bike out there even for a two week trip.

Also, bear in mind that this is for the usual rental practice of returning a hire bike back to the same place you got it from. Rental charges for point-to-point rides (like East coast to West coast) are obviously more expensive so the cost of transporting your own bike makes even more sense.

The other thing of course, is that it is so much more satisfying riding your own bike on a big adventure trip. I’m really not seriously considering renting at all.

The prices are a bit out of date, but this article from 2017 gives a pretty good overview of what’s what in the case of the USA :)

  6. As I’m feeling not so old for touring harley, so I bought dyna super glide custom month ago. Multistrada DVT will remain as main bike anyway.

  8. That was as funny as f*ck and that young lad is quite a rider ... I couldn't go as quick as that on the single track on my bloody Africa Twin!!

The mistake they made though was choosing a pussy-ass Sportster ... they should have used this instead ... given the same knobblies I'm certain that it would do a lot better off-road ;-) I’m taking it for a test-ride later this week so I’ll let you know what I make of it.
