So Why Is Donington So Slippery In The Wet?

Discussion in 'Trackdays & Rider Skills' started by antonye, May 27, 2014.

  1. image.jpg It rained much heavier last year and first time for me on full wets and no issues with grip at all! 12 months later and wet but not torrential, me lacking track time, bike only just rebuilt and looking pretty, tentative laps to make sure nothing falls off and a few more just getting some confidence, no slides or warnings and bang! Down she goes and not so pretty anymore. Got no idea what happened other than a sudden lack of adhesion followed by involuntary dismount:Banghead:

  2. It did look pretty when I saw it :(

  4. I'm just asking for opinions, not banging on about it. I'd rather base my knowledge on fact rather than assumptions, so I was asking if anyone with a more knowledgeable background than me - ie, someone in the aircraft and/or the tarmac industry - could give some insight into whether this rumour was true or not.

    Someone like Ricky is a prime example, as he works with aircraft. He could well have popped up and said "Oh yeah, we have loads of problems with X because of Y..." and that would have been it. Or we could have had Mr MacAdam pop up and say "Oh no, it wouldn't be the tarmac because..." or maybe even "Don't be stupid, they've laid X type of surface that does Y..." and that would have been it.

    But so far nobody has offered any proof, either way, only theories.

    And apologies for riding Brands as my last circuit, but it is only 20 miles away and we had great fun in the sunshine, although the first session was a little bit foggy but the track was still dry!

    Having not raced for a few years now I do prefer trackdays and having ridden on most circuits in the UK, and some abroad like Assen, I'm pretty happy to ride at "boring old Brands" because it's still track riding and I can still practise, learn, get faster and enjoy myself. I was hoping to get on another trackday earlier this year but unfortunately "Real Life" has got in the way so I've not been able to get out but WDW is only 49 days away and I'll be riding round Misano on whatever I can get my hands on while I'm out there!

    Also, I don't understand the "Jerry" reference?

  7. Dumping fuel at altitude and it landing on the track at Donington! Kerosene is basically diesel, but very clean diesel, but if it were to land on the track then the grass surrounding the track would be in line for a dose as well which would kill it within days and would not grow back for 3years. I have not been to Donington for a few years so can't comment on the state of the grass or even the surrounding crop fields which would also be at the mercy of the drop. Anyone notice the state of the grass or crops lately? Me thinks this would be a good starting point!!

  8. At last a technical answer that makes sense. But will it kill the myth...

  9. ok....:Banghead::Wtf:

  10. oh and if the track was slippy because of the aviation fuel when it rains......why isn't it slippy when its dry as the same amount of planes fly over in the dry as wet....and it aint that hot to evaporate.

  11. wow, maybe its the tarmac, road profile, run off water contaminants and ground table water properties.

  12. Well I have just washed my bike and as I had a great deal of grass and stones in my belly pan I can confirm there is nothing wrong with the grass so I think we can safely say that the aircraft fuel issue is a myth!
