Start the bike at least once a month, engage 1st gear and spin the rear wheel if possible. Over long periods of inactivity the oil coating on the internal components drains to the sump eventually leaving sprockets bearings etc exposed. Condensation within the casing will then attack the bare metal. This is a common problem with classic cars that have been laid up for a considerable time, once the corrosion eats the tempered surface the soft metal underneath wears away with use.
