I tried to find a relevant thread to attach info to but wouldn't have bothered had I twigged it was a repeat - the fact that it was on BBC4 was also a clue.
Space, yep Space. Been there done that. Not a lot to do in space. I remember it being very quiet. You know you can't hear yourself in Space. Well I could hear myself, in my head. Anyway, not a holiday for the family, better head to Florida.
Space is big. Distances are large. Distances are measured in the speed it takes light to travel in a year. We don't travel at the speed of light, or anything remotely like it. We don't live very long. Consequently, we won't be seeing much of space up close. Time to get used to that and forget the sci-fi.
We are on a journey, and someday, we will take a flight into the cosmos and wonder at its magnificent beauty, and land on distant planets, while wondering, will I need to pay duty on the fags and whiskey, hoping it don't rain, and are the locals really out to rob me. Space has nothing more to offer than what we already have. We just don't know it. Peace people
You are assuming that space/time is a uniform linear continuous dimension which cannot/will not be manipulated.
My mate works in IT like me and below his signature he's got all his exam passes like a lot of them do (not me, haven't got any!) but in amongst them he's got BSc and in even smaller type it says "Bonze Swimming Certificate" - still makes me laugh now...
Ive just picked up on this thread....my own personal opinion? I think there are technologies out there that aren't available for us to know about...why do I think this way, well, its backed up with a short story, something that happened to me some time ago...now, I cant be totally exact with the information as it was a long time ago....this could be a long post and its a little bit left field... I used to work (before I did IT) for a very small company that made stuff out of wire mesh...we sold mesh to anyone and everyone and had a little shop front for people coming in off the street... Bloke comes in one day and asks for a specific type of mesh, very specific which, is unusual as everyone who come in and asks for "some fine mesh" I show them, they say either "finer" or "coarser" as we had meshes in stock that could hold water... Anyway, bloke comes in asks for a 60 mesh 34 grade in 316 stainless, very specific on both guage and mesh hole. I cut some mesh for him and he goes....comes in a week later, (and I might add that he's dressed in jeans, tshirt, nothing out of the ordinary) asks for a 40 mesh, forget the grade but stays in 316...cut the mesh, bloke goes....back in a week later, asks for 80 mesh. So, I say to him.... "you keep coming in for different types of meshes like your guessing at something....can I help...?" "you wouldn't believe me if I told you..." "try me" "weve built a canister that separates water...." "fuck off....." "We're trying to get go get it to separate the right amount...its working too well and keeps "popping the top off" "popping the top off?" "Yeah - weve got it attached to the side of car, its in a pressurized container and when it makes to much hydrogen it blows - the different mesh sizes produce different amounts. we negatively charge the case and positively charge the mesh and it happens, there are 3 different rings separated by rubber bungs to hold the mesh in place in the water..." "So, youre saying youre getting oxygen and hydrogen from this?" "yep - weve been using it for welding for ages, we want to use it to power a boiler..." "Fucking hell, youre rich...!" "Well, since weve started, there are 3 others. They've all had their houses broken into in different parts of the country on the same night, nothing taken....so were a little worried..." The conversation goes on a little and then he goes....never saw him again....now if he was taking shite - why did he come and buy upwards of 150 quids worth of mesh...? or, if he did do it .....why didn't he come and get more....? As I say this conversation was 20 odd years ago...
Just to add....as my cursor started to slow down....I did ask him where he got the design from...he said he got it from a magazine at the time called "Nexus".....now ironically I used to buy it....I love a good conspiracy theory - I take them with a pinch of salt and that magazine had some absolute sky pilots writing articles but others genuinely did make you think....ie apparently there are something like 130 odd people that have known Bill Clinton that have died under mysterious circumstances...land owners, solicitors etc etc...makes for interesting reading....in there, there was a page called "new science" - that's, apparently where they got the design from.... As I say might be bullshit might not be....
Comfy Your man was probably experimenting with Electrolysis, something like this: Separate Hydrogen and Oxygen from Water Through Electrolysis
