Thank you all guys!! On Wednesday we have a bank holiday here in Spain, so I will have some time to review all your suggestions. I must say they all sound great!
I'm with Johnv earlier suggestion.... Up through Wales, Peak District, Yorkshire dales, Lake District, maybe Northumberland but if you like miles I'd keep heading north and west after that. Carlisle to Glasgow by motorway to save a bit of time then A82 glencoe, fort William... Continue up to Ullapool. Avoid all cities and keep West. Bring waterproofs.
Wouldn't worry too much about security if staying out of the big cities. Don't know how bad motorcycle theft is in the north of Spain but if it's anything like as bad as it is in Andalusia, UK will be a doddle for you. All good suggestions on here as to your route. Maybe try to split your time between the south and the north. A few of us sometimes ride down to Matlock on a weekend and that is well worth it. Good roads, countryside and 1000's of other bikes. Ian
Again, thank you all! My plan is to spend around a week and a half, but I haven't booked anything yet (I think I should book the ferry soon). Yep, I'll take my leather suit and full waterproofs (over-suit, gloves, boots...)
I have an extra question... what about law in the UK? Is the police too strict? I mean, I wear quite a lot of non-homologated stuff (mirrors, exhaust, turn signals..) I'll modify my exhaust to make it more silent, but they will still not be strictly legal...
And beyond. But it is a very long way in the time available. There is north of the border, north of the Great Glen and north of Ullapool, each one just gets better than the last
Apologies if already covered, but here's a thought. Most of England is rubbish for biking in (Spain is one my favourites). How about up though the Brecon Beacons to Snowdonia, ferry to Dublin' Across to Galway or Donegal, depending on how much time you've got, then back around the noth coast to Antrim (spectacular glens of Antrim), ferry to Cairnryan. From Cairnryan, up the west coast of Scotland, across to Thurso, down to Inverness, then Cairbgorms to Perth and Edinburgh or Glasgow. If you have time on the way down you could do the North Yorks moors, which is nice and the benefit is you only do the horrible Midlands once. I've done more or less this with a Group in a week, form outside the UK. This included a Monster. You don't need to worry about petrol, other than to be a bit careful north of Fort William in Scotland for distance between stops. If you're worried about this, ask if you have a specific route. Happy to help but I'm sure FinnM knows the stops better than me. Some good stops wherever you go. Stonehenge, Tintern, Snowdon, Portmerion, Galway Bay, Giant;s Causeway and all of Scotland
Some interesting useful posts and some utter tosh , Having what I guess is around 8 - 9 days here and then setting yourself a achievable target of around 250miles a day (may need to squeeze in a few more some days) you've got time to do most of Britain, we have great roads here but unfortunately a little too busy most of the time , if it was me from Portsmouth I'd head southwest down it to Cornwall follow the southern coast line when you can. St Ives I'd recommend for a stop over then head back up the northern coastline thru Devon and North Somerset to the Burford area in the Cotswolds for your next stopover from here head west in to Wales up thru this gorgeous country on to Chester were I'd stop fron here to the Lake District and Carlisle stopping over when suits. From here jump on the motorway upto and thru Glasgow and as said before go up thru Scotland staying as westerly as you can I'd go at least to Ullapool , come back down thru central Scotland before drifting east towards to Edinburgh (worth a drive thru as immensely pretty city) head south staying to the east to Northumbria from there try to come thru the Yorkshire dales and then the Peak District then Derbyshire, Warwickshire, and Wiltshire for you Stonehenge / Avebury visits. Keep us updated on your progress and whereabouts while your here may come and meet up for a coffee and even ride along for a bit . Now before everyone starts yes I know the east and south east have some great roads and towns but the best bits are Cadwell, Snetterton, and Brands Hatch but doing a couple of track days might be pushing it.
Agreed John Actually a route I may tackle this year myself but will always have the option to randomly jump on the boreway to get back on track.
Totally agree with the route suggestion, but 250 miles a day! That's only about 5 hours on non motorway roads based on my quite extensive long distance riding experience. Fair enough if you're stopping to look at stuff every so often, but I would suggest aiming for 350 miles a day if you want to do a day of riding on non motorway roads. Bear in mind that if you find yourself behind schedule and need to get to Portsmouth in a day then it can be done from the highlands of Scotland. I have ridden from Aviemore to Chichester/Bognor Regis in a single day quite a few times.
The police in the UK don't give on the spot fines so if you are riding a foreign registered bike and holding a foreign driving licence there isn't a lot they can do to you unless your actions warrant being arrested e.g. dangerous driving. They can't do anything about non-legal bike modifications on a foreign vehicle unless they deem them to be dangerous. A loud exhaust, small mirrors, tiny indicators, etc. are not going to bother them.
If your bike is legal to ride in your EU country then it is legal to ride in any other EU country. There may be modifications that you get away with in Spain, but the British police cannot make you change anything, as a visitor, to meet the UK regulations, within reason.
I can't imagine being in the Cairngorms and having a sudden desire to rush to Bognor Regis. The other way round, certainly. Were you doing it for research purposes?
My dad lives near Aviemore, so when I go to see him I tend not to waste time too much time on the journey so that I can spend more time with him. Sometimes I combine it with visiting my mum in Sheffield so I'll break the journey on the way to or from Aviemore. Obviously I never have any desire to rush to Bognor Regis, surely nobody does, but unfortunately I do live there and occasionally I need to go to work from there ;-)
