998 Standard 998 Or A 748r

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Phill748, Mar 23, 2017.

  1. Nope, plug and play. Did it to the 748R shower injector set up on the 853 and it made the fuel mapping more consistent throughout the rev range. Andy

  2. I have a 748R engined 748S and also a stock 998. Everyone will have their own opinion of these two models, which are actually quite different to my mind.

Personally the 748R bike is pretty good on the road for me although, as has been mentioned, it is less good in traffic and at lower speeds. CJS did the remapping for me as I use a stock 748 airbox and injectors.

A properly set up 748R should not suffer from the problems that are often well noted on these forums, however I doubt that it would ever be as smooth as a 998. The 998 was newer technology when it came out and therefore the engine is just that bit smoother and more refined. It also is a lot easier to ride in town or high traffic situations, based on my experience.

To sum up, if you want a more involving ride on a bike that revs a bit higher and has to be "ridden" a bit more then a 748R could fit the bill.

If you want a more docile in traffic and a smoother ride with plenty of pickup and torque then maybe look at the 998. The 998S is a slightly different beast as it has about 12BHP more and does feel just that bit more quicker again. I have ridden both and happily settled for a 998 at the time, when looking to buy new. It's plenty quick enough and the straight line speed is pretty decent.

I lower the gearing on my bikes by adding one tooth on the back sprocket, this makes them easier to ride round town and in traffic and does no harm to the top end realistically.

If you ride a 998 on stock gearing you will find it to be highly geared and getting down to 20mph is difficult as it really wants to chug along at about 30mph on stock gearing and sometimes you have to slip the clutch to get it to go down to lower speeds.

As for my 748R engined bike it plainly doesn't like going slow and I find riding in low gears on higher revs seems to work on that, again though, slow speed riding is not for this bike or for me as it does tend to lurch. I do run Champion racing plugs in this bike all the time however and I am well aware that this does not help when it comes to slow town riding. A decent set of stock plugs would no doubt see an improvement.

The answer is of course to ride both and then you can compare for yourself.

  4. I just bought a 998 last night, my first Ducati! I think I got a bargain, it needs a full service, it's done 15k so will get it shimmed if needed, really chuffed with it and excited about getting out on it once it's had a good check over!

  8. 998 get a full 50mm and chip it really opens the engine up you will notice the difference and they just fit I did it to my ex

  9. That's probably first on my shopping list, do you find many second hand items?

  10. Who's chip did you use? Or is it better to get the stock ecu flashed?

  11. The 998 has a different ECU setup and does not use a chip, you would need to get the ECU map put on by someone who has the facilities ideally, although you can do it yourself.

Termignoni's for this model at 45MM come, when new, with their own ECU which seems to be taken from a 996R as that is what is marked on the ECU.

Don't forget the 998 is not a deep sump model so you would need the correct downpipes for a full 50mm system or use a 45/50 link pipe for a half system conversion.

  12. There are items about i no longer have the correct ECU part numbers but some very good chaps here will help I ll bet but it's well worth a bit of research and get the correct one it's well worth the money but sometimes the real problem is finding the parts good luck
