1200 Pikes Peak Strange Weaving Problem

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Ian-SA, Feb 17, 2020.

  1. I can save you hours... they weave at speed. Some worse than others. My first was 110mph and over, my current is 135mph and over. I don't actually know how fast a Multistrada is flat out, as I've never been brave enough to top an indicated 150mph on it.

  2. He's got Skyhook, so if suspension is suspected as the cause set it back to Default. I assume the OP didn't have the bike from new so who knows what settings the previous owner(s) put in.
Also I'm a bit suspicious of a 3/4 worn rear tyre. If it has squared off rather than worn evenly then that tyre would be a prime candidate.

  3. He may have Skyhook but you still have to set the pre-load manually on the front ie using a spanner!

  4. My money is something at the back

If the Tyre pressures are good then i would be looking at the preload on the rear

My Pikes peak ( DVT ) had a slight weave at just over a ton
When i took it to Ohlins specialist for proper set up the rear was very soft and the front overly hard

It is now set static and dynamic sag and the weave has gone

  5. Hi redrick I have the same bike 67plate dvt pp it weaves at 115mph ohlins set up by a specialist new road pilot 5 I have yet to try the bike at speed without a top box ? I had a 2012
Multi fully loaded two up never weaved at bit just wonder if it’s to do with the front Design

  6. Let me know when you’re next over.

Actually we have to go to Capetown in Dec, whereabouts are you?

Check out the Suspension sub-forum on here, it’s actually not that much of a dark art.

  7. Check the tightness of BOTH rear axle nuts. Found the sprocket side was loose on my 13 S .
    Cheers

  8. I should add that mine is the new one with the slightly longer wheelbase ( i think )

I still reckon that anything causing front end weave is certain to be a problem at the rear and a top box could cause a weave

Worst weave i ever had was when i tried to max out my GSA with panniers and top box. it was fine to about 120 and then got a proper wobble on quite scarily so

Without the boxes on it was rock steady at 130+

Just to add that every rear puncture i have ever had has always been felt most noticeably at the front

  9. My 2013 had a weave at speed. Andriani internals up front, pro set up, Dunlop Sportsmart tyres. Guy following me at Blyton Park track day on a Fireblade said the weave was visible.

Never managed to eliminate it, but never it felt life threatening.

  10. Yep, same on standard GS . Tried to max out 2 years back on Autobahn and I chickened out due to the weave lol.

  11. Sure you had the same...The weave on the straight is nothing compared to that on the brakes on track....just skates along so out of shape it feels heroic lol

  12. I've had both of mine (2010 S and 2012 S) to north of 150mph with only slight weave regardless of luggage / pillion (solo / + topbox / + panniers / fully loaded, 2 up / + topbox / + panniers / fully loaded)

In the early days we put this down to the mirrors and hand guards. Remove both and the problem goes away.
Its certainly not significant enough that I worry about it, or even notice it now.

In addition to what has already been suggested I would be checking things like:
    - have you changed the screen to a big one, or have the screen set at full height.
    - what tyres are you running, and what pressures.
    - have you tried changing tyres (I run PR4s, and in my experience they can wear uneven, so feel crap once half worn)

The DVTs are renowned for weaving at speed. I can actually see my mates 2016 DVT moving about when riding behind him at speed, and he has his panniers on.

  13. Coming back to the Rideapart article posted above (#7) is it perhaps possible that something is aerodynamically providing 'lift' at the front above a certain speed thus lessening the weight over the front wheel?

  14. When 'progressing' one time I found the bike getting out of shape, moving to 'Race' from 'Touring' emiinated it. I assume you tried that?

  15. My 2010 was a completely different animal when switching from pirelli profile to michelin pilot road (whatever edition it was then).
Planted and progressive on pirelli, nervous and twitchy on the michelins. I didnt chase the michelins with pressure/suspension adjustments, just went
    back to pirellis instead.

  16. How do you get race mode. ...probably covered elsewhere but just curious and can't be arsed searching.....;-)

  17. Lol, then you don't need race mode

  19. On my new 2013 twin spark I was touring when the front tyre wore down to an odd wavy pattern. It affected the handling but I got round it until I could replace it by keeping the bike in Sport mode. It worked pretty well.
Don't be too hard on @Niel Roberts, but if he does indeed have a Race mode I'm keen to hear about it!

  20. I opened this thread thinking it would be about this stuff...
