You're right,you can't use a stand though the sprocket side, you need to remove the sprocket & carrier, the axle will then come out from the wheel side to allow you access to the hanger. You'll need some large strong circlip pliers to remove the clip holding it on.
Ah, yes , I was getting ahead of myself. Swap your rearsets over and rest them on axle stands to support the bike.
