My 6 month old 2000 mile DVT died last week. Under normal conditions/riding it just switched off (dash off, engine off)...coasted to a halt, reset and it was OK so kept going. All was fine for another 40 miles when it happened again. Unfortunately by now I was 80 miles from home on a Sunday and it had started p***ing down. It got worse and worse until it would only run for 20 seconds then cut out again. No engine warning lights, no error codes, temperature, water, oil all perfect. Eventually managed to limp it home late on the Sunday night....sent an urgent email to dealer as it was booked on the ferry for Assen this last weekend. They called me first thing Monday morning (before their opening time) and arranged pickup. By Tuesday it was apparent there was a serious fault but couldn't locate it (apparently many pages of data sent to Ducati)...it wasn't going to be a quick fix. So they lent me another Multi for my trip, and swapped over my luggage rack and sat nav mount. Still waiting for a fix but they did everything they could to make sure my trip and weekend went as planned (although I now appreciate skyhook even more over the standard suspension). I don't think they HAVE to provide this service under their dealer obligations so thanks guys....hope to get the multi back soon.
Will let you know how it goes. Bought a 14 model end last year with 4 k on it. Nearly 10k now its being caned most of the time. Great bike so far including two up Germany trip and a fast Scotland weekend with the lads. Used through the winter as well without bits falling off, going rusty or seizing. Really trying not to be biased because I have one, 1st impressions are of superior build quality and materials. Also did 5k on an S1000r without issue. Again nice quality and no issues. 15k on my MTS and nothing major, but plenty small issues and also material quality was very poor. (corrosion and soft fasteners) I only know two people personally with Multis and both have had significant and expensive issues.
My experience is completely the opposite to yours. See my post on page two. I've gone from a brand new GSA to the MTS DVT having owned an air cooled 2011 GSA before that. Interesting that a quick shifter is now fitted. Based on my experience of the GS gearbox and clutch it's probably to compensate for this issue? I hope you enjoy the GS but BMW is just no longer for me. I'm very happy with my DVT and off to Spain on it again this year, same as last year when it didn't miss a beat.
Just got back from a France trip for the Somme commemorations and Spa for the bikers classic ( which is totally brilliant if you haven't been) 3K on my 2016 DVT, fuel gauge packed up, a small weep from the brake master cylinder and a nasty sound from the front when wheeling it around, sounds like the brakes ? Also got the erratic idle on start up, none of it really bothers me except the fuel gauge thing, that's a pain in the arse , any way its going in to get sorted. The morning of the trip my mate picked up a new S1000 XR and he totally loves it, and while comparing the two bikes I thought his feels a lot lighter to move around, getting on and off etc, but the claimed weight figures don't show that much difference ? Its also bloody quick even running in, I'm hoping I've made the right choice or else I'll never hear the end of it lol. Also I cant seem to get the steering lock to work ? What do I need to do ?
When you are ready to put on the steering lock, have the bike with the steering set fully to one side or the other all the way to the stop. Switch off the ignition (lowest button, right bar). Wait a few seconds. Then press the same button (lowest button, right bar) again and hold it down. A green message bar will appear on the screen. Keep holding the button. Two seconds later the steering lock will click on. Release the button. Job done.
The fuel gauge is sadly a common problem with the sender unit (same on the previous MTS model). This should be replaced under warranty. The squeeling from the front brakes is another common issue. Just get the dealer to apply some copper grease between the brake pistons and the back of the pads. With regards to the steering lock this can only be applied after the second flash of the dash lights. If it's something else again you need to get it sorted under warranty. A friend of mine had a problem with his in that when the lock was 'off' the bikes cpu stated it was still on, so wouldn't start. Thankfully this hasn't happened to mine. He got it fixed under warranty. The erratic idle might just be a software update issue and lastly the weeping master cylinder could just be down to the dealers mechanic not seating the seal properly or failing to tighten it up when locking the top in place. In a nutshell everything can be sorted when you get the fuel sender replaced. Stick with it, it just sounds like minor stuff. All the best
Can we just get this clear - are you talking about a weep from the brake fluid reservoir (the transparent cylindrical container with a circular lid on top)? Or a weep from the brake master cylinder (the metal device which the hand brake lever is attached to and pivots on)? If it is from the reservoir lid, that is a minor matter and nothing to worry about. If the master cylinder is leaking that is serious and possibly dangerous. Get it seen to urgently.
With the amount that seem to have a weeping reservoir, I'm amazed there are any multis without paint stripped across the tank
Reservoir cap, I am mechanically inept but even I know this isn't a biggie, I should have been a bit clearer !

Done 10K miles on mine and apart from the usual non disruptive issues like FTS, Sidestand and brake lines rubbing paint of front mudguard its been sweet as a nut. Lots of 2 up and heavy right hand along the way. Just of to Spain / Portugal for another 2.5K miles )
Glad it's all gone well for your DVT. Likewise off to Spain on my GS soon. I find the gearbox perfectly decent on the GS. I haven't had any false neutrals which I got on my DVT between 4th and 5th, and 5th and 6th. Particularly long throw between those cogs. The quick shifter on the GS works well.
Mistakes are human. Mistakes that cost less are called minor - like brakes on a suzuki, or cheap parts on a yamaha, or overweight on a honda. Mistakes that cost significantly more are called Ducati character! Sour as always!
