The tool bit into the plug just nice and didn't stress the threads of the plug. Just need a new sump plug now Thanks again for all your support and suggestions.
Would advise you get an aftermarket one with a hex head, easier to fit/remove and does away with the sloppy fitting allen key hole...

to cut to the chase in the worst scenario, it's best to make yourself familiar with the holes in the sturdy base of your filter, after tearing all the coke-can stuff off. I modified an old tool to locate in these but I know a mate on here who managed with a pair of long-nosed pliers..
