I've got the Evo full system. I assume its also available for the '17..? I say that because the new bike has a different map to start with and an exhaust flapper valve which my '16 does not. If its available and you can stretch to it the Evo system is the one to have. Its two grand but makes a huge difference. Sounds fantastic without being annoying, restores all the boom and thud that a big over square V twin should have, the map quickens the throttle and really fattens up the bottom end. Akra claim it adds 12 bhp and for once I'm inclined to believe them. The slip-on adds no extra performance, sounds very slightly better but not much and still costs £700. Its saves a bit of weight but that's about all and even then its only half the weight saving of the Evo. I know of a couple of '16 bikes that have Austin Racing systems and I'm not convinced. They're very noisy but not in a nice way - they sound harsh - and the dyno figures that I've seen at best make little difference and may even blunt the power a bit. The AR looks pretty but the Evo works. I was down West Bay one Sunday and blipped the throttle when someone was standing behind the bike eating a portion of chips and it blew some of the chips out of the tray. That's the ticket.
I haven't. I like my orange original too much to want to change it. On paper the '17 shouldn't be soft. It's got more compression, a higher rev ceiling and an extra 4 bhp but it's been comprehensively Euro'd and it's 6 kg heavier. I've heard on the forum grapevine (so may or may not be true..) that the ECU cannot be over-written and that puts me off more than anything. I want to give mine the full Rottweiler treatment at some point with a custom map and I'm not sure you can do that with the new one. I would like the race WP suspension but as WP are such a pain in the arse to deal with - they never return calls or emails even to dealers - I'll probably go Ohlins TTX and a Mupo cartridge kit.
Me and my mate, both on Diavels, were out with another lad on Sunday on a 1290. They are a friggin weapon. Our Diavels are torque monsters but that thing wanted to wheelie everywhere, it had a full titanium Akra and remap done. We went to Barmouth, one of our favourite rides. When we started them up people jumped, both Dukes have unbaffled full Termis. Over the hills the 1290 was quicker than us I reckon tbh, but Daz, the 'pilot' is a better rider in all fairness and does track days pretty often. I think if I change me Diavel a 1290 will be on the to look at list for sure. Stuart
@Gimlet, if your in the Ktm forum, can you possibly find out if anyone has changed from mk1 to mk2 bike and their thoughts? I'm seriously considering jumping ship due to ducati new bike price hikes and increased piss taking service costs, it's not even about affording anymore, it's solely about the principle of it, cheers if you can
I've had a look. Not come across any direct comparison threads from people who traded in, bit too soon perhaps, but a few from first timers on whether to get a used 16 or a new 17. General consensus at the time was get the 16 and spend the money saved on suspension mods. This thread probably sums it up.covers it. http://www.superduke.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27423 The journalists almost universally rave about the '17 but as always its the greatly improved track capabilities they focus on. My hunch is that most riders will hardly notice the difference on the road. Have a look round the forums, see if I've missed anything: http://www.superduke.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=25 http://www.ktmforum.co.uk/forum.php http://www.ktmsmt.com/index.php
Don't think so @Pavey. Looks like the one featured in a thread recently on the KTM forum. A one-off made in Australia I think. This is the Austin Racing high level system, the only off-the-shelf one I know of: Its hellish loud though and needs a custom map. AR made a one-off twin can under-seat system for someone recently. There was a vid about it on one of the forums, I forget which. I'll see if I can dig it out. Looked very cool, a bit like the under seat Akra system on the V4 Pani but I bet the cost was horrendous.
Thanks. I think i saw that vid on YouTube, was extremely loud. The boss man (Mr Austin) was on it if the same one?
Was talking to a bloke from London today down at Loomies who had a 2017 SDR and had owned a 2015 previously. He said the new 17 SDR is an all round better bike, the QS is amazing up and down the box, the electronics certainly make it more civilised but no less aggressive and how you'd want an SDR to be.......So, the writing is on the wall then ??
That's the one. Personally I think that amount of noise would drive me mad and you'd be constantly getting pulled.
I agree with the Akra, but the full system is just so effing ridiculous money for a small piece of metal tube ??
Having seen and ridden a bike with a slip on akra, it's not worth it. It's big for an Akra and doesn't even do away with the exhaust valve. For that money, I'd at least want the (future problem when it starts sticking like the multi's) valve gone. Got to be full system or nothing really.
About the same money as the average Termi system for Ducatis. Likewise you get a new air filter and a different map as well and it is full titanium. It hurt when I bought mine but was it worth it? Emphatically yes.
What about Racefit? They must make a pipe for it and if not, they'll make one. Lovely work and great guys.
Having sold my Tuono 1100 in November and owned an 675R for a few months I've now pulled the trigger on a new SDR - can't wait to pick her up next week. My local dealer won't deal with anything but Akra on the SuperDuke as they have seen a number of issues with other pipes. I have gone for the slip on (dealer is removing "fixed" baffle) just for the extra sound, I didn’t want anything abusively loud and unfortunately can't justify the extra for the full system. The full system still has the CAT which is the biggest muffler, but clearly it's been tailored to the bike better than any other exhaust, so the Austin Racing options might sound like hell unleashed but you’ll need a power commander and dyno to get worthwhile gains. I have also been advised that shorty exhausts often cause problems. Clearly some people on test rides have not had the track pack as you need that to turn anti-wheelie off. Once turned off I don’t think there is a better bike for lofting the front wheel. I’m looking forward to weekend blasts, track days and touring. To me there is not a better “do it all” bike. I did go see an ultra-low mileage black bike a few weeks back and the paintwork was absolutely awful, it looked like it had been washed with a brillo pad. I assume it was caused by the previous owner.
