Switzerland And The Plod.....

Discussion in 'Touring' started by MrACD, Mar 7, 2022.

  1. The road from Morzine to Thonon les Bains is what we call the Thonon GP. Refreshments lakeside at a fancy restaurant, then back again. Rinse repeat.

  3. Many of these passes close during winter and usually reopen early June.

  4. cycled le Marmotte a few years ago snow still at the top of Galibier, it was bloody freezing. :cold_sweat:

  5. Did the St Bernard pass from Italy to France in July 2014, 20degrees in Italy, snowing at the top of the pass. The Multistrada had a nice message on the dash, flashing to say temperature was below 3 degrees. Helpful.o_O
Saying that, I used to live in Consett in the North East, came out the pub at mid night in July to find an inch of snow...
    High ground.
In case you are wondering about the relevance, there are two St Bernard passes, the petite and the grand, cannot remember which is which. One is Italy to Switzerland, one Italy to France!

  7. This picture looks like Col d’Izoard!

  8. Grumpy git mode.... I'm all for heavier fines for excessive noise....These loud exhausts the chavy element favor have got ridiculous, especially with the pop and bang overrun maps engaged.
I'm all for a 'nice' sounding bike or car, but loud for loud sake is just being a twat...Not cool.

  11. I’d agree about the Timmelsjoch pass. Fabulous road (as it’s a toll road I’m not even sure if has a speed limit?)

The pass on the other side into Italy is also fabulous SS44

  12. The shot I posted was the Col d'Izoard, this one's on the Galibier :D

  13. The hardest of the climbs I cycled on that day, fast decent though over the other side. Only a handful of times I’ve been slowed down by cars ‘the Kent’s’.

  14. Is the picture included with the speeding fine :D

  15. I don’t believe cops hang around those passes, in France. ;)

And anyways, speeding on these roads takes some serious skills and balls. Izoard, on the southern side, is pretty impressive. Get on the wrong side on the 10 inches wall and you’re facing a 1000 foot free fall. I rarely ride with my chute on.

  16. France (Pyrenees) so less chance of a fine and I ride too slowly anyway!

  19. Ridden through Switzerland a number of times. One of our group was 'given advice' at the border about his noisy exhaust. Told the fine would be 600 Euros if stopped. The second thing to watch out for is there are speed cameras as you exit some of the tunnels. A group of friends who had taken their bikes to Mugello for track days got caught exiting a tunnel. Every 2nd van got caught - it obviously had to reset after each flash. The cameras would catch a bike as they are rear facing.

  20. Might invest in a radar detection thing!
