Tank range

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Mac, Jul 10, 2013.

  1. I'm home now from my European jolly and according to the trip computer I've done 2,065 miles at an average speed of 53mph with average fuel consumption 50.1mpg.

The average speed was dragged down by heavy traffic in places, a 30 mile round trip off road where I was crapping myself and didn't go over 25mph and quite a few Alpine passes featuring plenty of hair pins and the mpg varied according to whether I was on a motorway doing a steady 90mph (indicated) or giving it abuse on decent roads but overall 200 miles to a tank was about as far as I wanted to push it.

I hadn't realised until this trip that after the fuel gauge has been on one bar for a while it starts to flash as an irritating reminder that walking isn't far away and the lowest figure I saw on the remaining tank range was 1 mile before I finally found a petrol station.

Apart from the off road stupidity all the miles were done with full luggage and it was hot every day which may or may not affect the fuel consumption. Annoyingly the MTS was using between 1 - 2 litres more fuel between fills than the wifes Triumph Sprint ST but I blamed that on the fact that I kept buggering off into the distance when the road was particularly twisty then riding along at about 30mph on straights until she caught up

  2. Best I have managed to date is 206 miles for 17.6 litres with a remaining range of 11 miles. The last segment had not started flashing. Calculated MPG was 53ish computed said 59MPG so a bit out.

  3. Should I be kicking off at Ducati when my bike goes in for its annual service because most times I fill it the fuel gauge only shows half full until I've done about 40 miles and then it suddenly decides to show something more believable

  4. RTFM  There's a bit in the handbook that says this happens if you overfill it.

  5. I usually get between 150 - 200 miles out of a tank. However you have to brim the tank and does depend on how hard or soft your riding is. Sometimes people have had an ECU set up to enhance the 'petrol to performance' gain.

  6. Provided you have switched the ignition off while filling, then I say yes because I always fill mine right to the base of the neck and the gauge works perfectly.

  7. I kinda don't look too much at range it's more a time thing with me. If I'm motorway bashing at 85 ish (and yes we all do it) then hour and a half is about right for a quick break. Autobahn at 100+ then one hour is enough for me to concentrate. Round the flowing A roads then a couple of hours gets you where you want to go.
To add my two penneth I have had as little as 100 miles to the light and as much as 160 to the light and 2 miles left on the range which to me is more important.

  8. On filling up tank, range usually says 220 - 230 miles, in reality usually look to fill up around 175 - 180 miles, with 20 mile left on range. Never found a massive differance across modes unlike some have mentioned.

  9. Very true. One of the reasons my 23mpg ST had to go! I averaged 44.8 over 2,600 miles in France recently with a light passenger and light luggage.

  11. Thanks. Just hope my wife doesn't find out about her before the divorce. All her fault of course. Well, she doesn't like bikes and won't go on the back.
