But like shagging the missus in the dark, if you cant see what you're getting fucked by it could be angolina jollie. so once a year being recommended of your duties is better than every tome you get on the old gal...
If a vehicle has not been taxed since 31 January 1998, you do not have to SORN it. In fact, DVLA will not allow you to SORN it even if you attempt to.
Well it's about time. But it probably means they'll be checking more so I'm actually going to have to get some. One of my bikes I've had for 9 years and have NEVER taxed it, but it doesn't come out too often. I'm with cranker v2 though, I can only ride one bike at a time, so at best I'd only have 1 tax disc.
I haven't yet been able to work out whether the monthly payment option means that I'll actually be able to buy my tax by the individual month and therefore only need to tax the bikes that I'm riding at the time, or whether I'll just simply be able to pay monthly for the same 6 or 12 month options that are currently available. Can anyone clarify this ? If the latter, then the authorities have missed a simple opportunity to make things fairer for bikers. After all it would only take a bit of software to organise proper monthly payment, wouldn't it ? Not that I'm naive enough to think that they'd be particularly bothered by that, but its unfair nevertheless. It seriously pisses me off when say, I want to give the monster an occaisional run out on a mild winter's day when its sorned, or when I want to go fishing in the summer but the hack bike is sorned and I can't fit my kit onto the monster without damaging the paintwork etc. In both cases I've paid my tax to use the roads, so why am I restricted to using a particular bike ? Its even more frustrating since I pensioned off my car and reverted to running just bikes all year round. To be honest, my attitude is "sod 'em". ....I'll take the odd ride untaxed and take my chances, rather than submit to the unfairness of a system devised by car drivers, for car drivers, with little regard for minority road users such as bikers. Its democracy at its most simplistic and flawed level when the majority takes such scant interest in minority groups. I suspect there's some fertile campaigning ground here for the likes of MAG. Unless of course, the monthly option has been set up properly, though I rather doubt it. Its not a simple issue, but I think I agree that road tax would be fairer if it was put on fuel. That way, the more miles you did, wearing out the roads and creating exhaust gas pollution, the more you'd pay. How can that not be a fairer system ? Ok, the road transport lobby would complain and the price of consumer goods might go up, but perhaps this is as it should be if the system is to be an adequate reflection of reality. ...and surely it would all level out in the wash if it was set up correctly to provide the same overall tax income to the government as the old system did. The way things are at present, the system is biased against the interests of a small minority who don't have enough political clout to do much about it....though my fingers do remain crossed in the hope that the new system allows a true monthly option.
It's nothing to do with upkeep of roads, otherwise how can the government justify allowing so many cars on the roads at zero road tax when we all have to pay. A 1 ton car degrades the road far more than a 1/4 ton bike so there must be some other reason.!!!!
No more tax discs from 2014... Anyone else seen this one ? BBC News - Car tax disc to be axed after 93 years Your thoughts ?
I see there is another thread about this in the Ducati General Discussion section - someone beat me to it...
"Why not put the tax on fuel?" Because we already have the most heavily taxed fuel in the world ! And none of that money is actually allocated for being spent on the roads...
Looking at it logically - removing the visual check that the tax-disc provides can only mean that there will be an increase in the use of ANPR cameras. Is that really what we need or want ?
I'm fascinated by the number of people on here who think it's OK to ride bikes that aren't taxed (or MoT-ed or insured)...
