Agree on that. Where I work we have a contract for hire cars. Recently someone had an accident in one and it was found to have a bald tyre. Guess who takes the can! Now we have been asked to check tyres, tyre pressures, oil levels, all lights are functioning, washer fluid level and undeclared damage, they're not asked us to check brake pads yet. I do wonder what the contract actually says!
I agree that the current system is not fair - but neither is putting the tax on the fuel. People who do not have access to decent public transport need to be able to use a car. They may not be able to afford a modern, more fuel efficient, vehicle. Road tax ( or, more correctly, "vehicle excise duty" ) is not a tax, it's a duty, and it doesn't get spent on the roads. Neither does the tax and duty already paid on fuel...
