998 Termignonis: Carbon Or Titanium?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by number9, Mar 4, 2022.

  1. At the time I took this picture: no, they were not correctly mounted. The previous owner used the wrong hardware to secure the silencers, and there was a cascading effect of everything being out of place.

Take a look at this post from the build (well, restoration) thread I started. Do you think the subframe is original? If so, what color is it supposed to be?

  2. as in my previous post. Its original…

  3. Blimey, that link took me back in time. Red is not an original colour, iirc biposto subframes were the same colour as the frame, monoposto subframes are a bare aluminium alloy colour. Someone could have painted it I suppose. Without comparing the two side by side it’s impossible to tell (ignoring the colour). However, it’s what’s on your bike so you have to work with it.

  4. Thanks guys. The bike has a load of non-original bits (most of which I am removing) so I would not be surprised if the subframe was painted. I haven't decided if I want to strip the paint and clear it, or paint it silver (like the subframe on my HM1100S).

Anyway I ordered a set of Termignoni titanium silencers for the 998! They are coming from Greece and I think I paid about 1,200 GBP. They appear to be NIB and come with the ECU. I'll make sure I get before and after videos so you can hear what, if any, differences there are in sound.

Oh, last but not least I threw a set of verniers on the pipes and they were 49.9mm right before the existing CF silencers.

  5. Are you’re titanium silencers 45mm or 50mm then? If the current CF ones are 50mm you obviously have a 45/50 link pipe.

Thanks for the info as to the price of the titanium silencers, much appreciated, my ‘bits of this and that’ stock has just appreciated significantly as I have a set of 45mm titanium Termi silencers on the shelf . Any takers?

  6. How much @West Cork Paul? i don’t suppose you’ve got a mono seat unit in your Pandora’s box have you?

  7. Judging by the Ducati part number, the Ti cans are 50mm. They come with a Ducati ECU as well. Speaking of which.. :)

    What's this then?

As my mother would say, it's all Greek to me:

As far as I can tell, it's a NOS exhaust. I'm not even sure the box had ever been opened! Weirdly, it came with a little Dainese bag in there as well. I didn't unpack anything further as I didn't want to scratch anything. I'll try and install it on the bike this weekend.

  8. I don’t want to detract from the thread but in direct response to your question, I have a set of 45mm Ti cans which came with my 998S when I bought it . 45mm I hear you say. Yes. The bike’s previous, and first, owner paid a Ducati dealer to supply a set of what he thought were 52mm Ti cans. I have the original receipt. They supplied him with a set they had in stock on another bike which are indeed 52mm, at the exit pipe, but only 45mm at the entry pipe. When fitting them they simply tucked them into the 50/50 link pipe, 50mm pipes being standard on the S model. How shoddy is that? So yes, they’re for sale.

I since replaced them with a set of 54mm Ti end cans, 54/50 link pipe and correct ecu. I do intend to sell these as well as I’m putting the bike back to standard.

I also have a genuine Ducati Mono seat unit albeit it’s yellow as it came off a 748R and is presently on my 748 which is also going back to standard.

Please send me a PM if you wish to discuss these items. I can’t start PMs as I was a naughty boy once and started using the other Ducati forum and was subsequently punished

    Apologies for the thread hijack.

  9. well i could maybe help as i have a 998 with carbon termis and an rsv1000 with Ti akra optional pipes. i’ll try and run them side by side tomorrow. the aprilia sounds utterly amazing.

  10. Funnily enough, the first bike I ever heard with a Ti exhaust was an RSV1000 around 2000 or 2001. It sounded divine.

  11. I think we've had a bit of a cock-up. The new exhaust clearly doesn't fit, as the Ti exhaust has a smaller OD than the outgoing CF exhaust. Sigh.

New an old exhausts, side by side:

    Old headers:
    IMG_3005.JPG IMG_3006.JPG

OD on the new Ti silencer is approximately 48mm:
    IMG_3007.JPG

OD on the old CF silencer is approximately 51mm:
    IMG_3008.JPG

Fitting the new Ti silencer. On the old CF silencer, it would fit into this joint:

I feel like an idiot. What can I do to fix this that doesn't involve chopping up anything? My guess is that I have a 45mm-50mm link pipe for the CF system and what I need is a 45mm-45mm instead for the Ti system.

I can't find an aftermarket one on eBay USA but there's this one on eBay UK. The thought of spending 200 quid for a pipe doesn't fill me with joy, though.

Can I use the stock link pipe from a 998 - will that be the right size? The part number is 57010701A and I've got a line on one for about $80

  12. You’ve been sold 45mm Ti pipes and you have a 45/50mm link pipe :(.

Yes, the stock 998 link pipe will work as that’s 45/45 and yes that’s the correct part number.

You may have to change the heat shields you have too as different link pipes have the mounting holes in different places.

  13. I'm not sure how I made the mistake; I thought the Ti kit was 50mm (based on Ducati part numbers) but I guess not! Oh well.

This is the link pipe I picked up. I got lucky; I was searching for 45mm link pipes on eBay but it was very hit or miss. Eventually I found the OEM part number in a Ducati parts fiche and searched for it on Google - the first hit that came up was that eBay link, which I bought straight away for about 50 pounds.

  14. Paul are those 54mm Ti end cans still available?

  15. This has turned into a bit of a farce. The new (used) OEM 45mm-to-45mm link pipe arrived today, and it doesn't seem to fit either. I think my issue must be that the existing CF system is actually a full system, not just silencers?

Here are the link pipes side by side:

    IMG_3127.JPG

And here's what happens when I try and install the 45-to-45 link pipe on the existing headers:

    IMG_3128.JPG

You can see that the 45mm link pipe fits in the "inner" part of the header, but not the "outer" part. Can I use the system like it is, or do I need to get OEM headers as well? At this point I'm seriously considering punting things. I guess the other thing would be to find a local exhaust shop to convert the OEM 45-to-45 link pipe into a 50-to-45... but that seems a bit Heath Robinson

The existing headers don't have any markings to identify them, except for a stamp that says ZDM-P22

  16. This is quickly turning into farce. I should have seen this problem coming, but I didn't: I had a local exhaust shop enlarge the inlets of the 45-to-45mm link pipe to turn it into a 50-to-45 link pipe. So far so good. But what I didn't realize at the time was that the geometry of the OEM 45-to-45 (now 50-to-45) link pipe and the Termi 50-to-50 link pipe are quite different. I had assumed that Termi headers would run in the exact same locations as OEM pipes, but they don't.

Because of this, and even if you ignore the size of the ports, the shapes are different and the overall dimensions are different. You can see them side-by-side here:

    IMG_3134.JPG

The camera distorted the perspective a bit, but the 50-to-50 pipe is clearly taller and "wider" than the newly-resized 50-to-45 pipe. Once it's installed, it doesn't really fit: the silencers connect to the link pipe, but the headers are in the wrong place and it turns into a dog's breakfast.

At this point I have two practical options:
    1. See if I can return the Ti system and live with the CF system
    2. Find used OEM 45mm headers and build a 100% 45mm system to use the Ti silencers
I've asked the seller for a refund and said that I'll cover shipping & volunteered a restocking fee. Keep your fingers crossed...

  17. Sorry Nick, I’ve only just seen this. They’re still on the bike at present so aren’t yet available anyway. I’ll bear you in mind as and when they do come off:upyeah:

  18. Is it possible that the 45 to 45mm link pipe you bought was for 916/996 instead of 998?
