The 848 Wheelie Issue

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by slinky848, Apr 6, 2017.

  1. 2nd gear dog wear is quite common as people stet off "spiritedly" in first then hammer it into second (regardless if the gearbox is ready or not).

The more times it pops out the more chance you have of bending the selector fork (if it's not already bent).

The dogs start off nice and sharp but over time the ends round over so you don't get as good an engagement, eventually they will get that bad that they will push apart and the selector fork can't hold the gear in position properly.

To be fair you could just have had a couple of miss shifts, or the selector detent spring is slightly weak.

  2. definatly not misshifts, i have miss shifted, it isnt that.

not sure about the selector thingy though

  3. Are you sure you're not inadvertently putting pressure on the gear lever with your foot as the wheel comes up ???

  6. If you can try and fully engage second gear before giving it beans and I then pops out under load it will be a dog/ fork issue.

1st to second is as bad as it gets for the gearbox as you have to pass through neutral to get into second gear (basically 2 gear changes in a single gear lever stroke).

  7. i am trying to say,

1st gear. low revs. in gear never touching the clutch,

snap onto full throttle the front picks up. when either the front gets above 2ft off the ground (a good 2foot clearance) and the revs pick up.

the acceleration stops, it pops out of gear, and i have to re-ingage the gear. often with the front down off the throttle at this point and into second due to speed. and then its like normal

  8. As Old Rider said you could be accidentally pushing up on the lever forcing it into neutral or the first gear dogs and selector fork could have issues.

Very unusual for a bike to jump out of 1st gear though.

The grinding noise is the dogs smacking/ clattering each other as the gear is only semi engaged, not a nice noise and not nice on the gearbox!.

  9. no i understand its not nice hence me in here asking tips.

next time i get the front up (on closed roads) i will ensure to keep my left foot well clear and see if it still happens.

if it does it sounds more and more like the gear dogs/selector arms thing
