  1. First pedal in about three weeks, far to windy. Twenty miles felt like forty.

  4. Why is it that on an out and back it feels like a head wind, then when you turn it was a tailwind after all.:sob:

  5. Well done if you're getting out. I'm on the turbo as it's been crap weather round here all week... very wet, very windy.

Got a outing on Xmas eve on the mtb in the slop but not seen the outside since. Couple of walks and the turbo is keeping me spinning.

  6. Be careful out there. Cyclists now being targeted via Strava by bike thieves

Criminal gangs follow cyclists on rural roads to steal bikes
Robbers who use mapping app to track riders on rural roads and threaten them very unlikely to be caught
    CHARLES HYMASHome Affairs Editor
CYCLISTS riding into the countryside are being followed by crime gangs who steal their high-end bikes as they exploit historic lows in police detection rates, a charity has warned.

Cycling UK said that when travelling out of London to the Kent and Surrey hills, riders may be unwittingly giving away their location on Strava, an app used to map routes and times.

Duncan Dollimore, head of campaigns at Cycling UK, said the phenomenon was “on the radar” of the Met and police in Kent and Surrey after a series of attacks on cyclists.

Alex Richardson, a 32-year-old professional cyclist, was robbed of his bike at knifepoint by four masked attackers in Richmond Park, south-west London. He called it a “shocking experience” and urged other cyclists to be careful.

In June, Jennifer George, a two-time Scottish road-race champion, said she had been attacked twice by men on motorbikes when riding near Oxted in Surrey.

There were also multiple reports of a moped gang targeting lone female cyclists after a rider was held on the floor while her bike was stolen near Warlingham in Surrey in April.

“It is possibly perceived as a low-risk crime if the numbers of people being caught are so low. It may be seen as a high reward, low risk crime,” said Mr Dollimore.

Home Office figures show the proportion of bike thefts solved by police fell to a historic low of 1.4 per cent in the year to June, down from 3.3 per cent in 2016.

Nine in 10 offences were closed without a suspect being identified.

Mr Dollimore said: “There have been increasing concerns about people cycling out to the Kent and Surrey hills who have been victims of muggings or robbery.”

There were limited routes for people cycling out of London, he added.

“[If] somebody [posts] on Strava what they are doing on their ride, the criminals will know it is someone on a £3,000 to £4,000 carbon-fibre bike who has unwittingly signposted the fact that they are likely to be heading out to the Kent or Surrey hills.”

Mr Dollimore said the charity understood that bike theft was a lower priority for police, but he warned that many of the offences were organised crimes where gangs targeted locations, such as stations, where they could steal as many as 30 bikes in 30 minutes.

  7. Strava has a useful 'hide start & finish points' feature, which I use. Doesn't stop a physical stalking, but no need to make it easy for the scumbags.

  8. I too use the same feature and profile locked up to only followers viewing, activities only viewable by followers too. I'm not fussed for leaderboards and koms. I'm only on to track my own progress.

At 50 odd, I'll not be troubling the young and the fast.

I've got a tech fobia at the best of time and i don't trust the internet hahaha

  10. My Strava hides my start/finish point, 1/2 mile I think and doesn’t show until the ride is completed, invariably my bike is out of sight & locked up before I post the ride. That’s not to say it can’t be tracked, but I’ve not seen that option.

My riding Strava season annoyingly has ended due to a chest infection that has nerfed my asthma into action. Antibiotics & steroids plus increased use of both inhalers has not yet fixed me and I’m to end the year 72 miles agonisingly short of my 3,000 target. I missed about six weeks due to holidays and other gaps, but had the end in sight right up until Boxing Day.

2023 target to be 5,000 kms and hopefully a few more tours, possibly repeat the Devon C2C and the Tour de Mon in August. I’ve been given a copy of Sustrans book of circular routes in the South, which I’m going to try as well.
    Ride safe everyone.

  12. Alongside electricity and their overlords electricians, who should be viewed with extreme prejudice.

    Alongside computer programmers and technicians.

  13. Frustrating for you, hopes dashed at the line. Heal well and onto 2023 and your target. GWS.

  14. Thankyou for your post.

This has been a known problem since Strava became a thing, when I did and do use Strava I don’t start or finish mine until we’ll away from home. I don’t want it known that I’ll be out of my house for a couple of hours.

Nor be tracked by the Mrs, as during daylight hours I may have on occasion finished work early and gone for a cycle ride and not done odd jobs that were required.

  15. I don't think strava has live tracking. If that's what you mean?

  16. No just the history, not live tracking.

On a side note a while back me and a pal went Green Laning, he switched Strava on and claimed so many segments……..

  17. Unless they've introduced a 'wife mode' :scream:
I left mine on once driving back from the Ridgeway and had the same results, they do eventually clear them off. There's some debate re ebikes claiming segments and KOMs.

  18. Weather's crap again round here. Looks like that'll be it for the year. I have a 400 hour yearly peddling goal on strava, which I've hit. I'm down on previous couple of years but that's due to holidays, motorbikes and no lockdown. During lockdown the only thing i could do was peddle and peddle I did. Overall , I'm happy with the year and satisfied for a mid fifties old fart.....

  19. As they should be, unless backed up with heart rates segments are now useless for comparison.

  20. Thinking about a new gravel bike.
Looking at Ribble, anyone have one?.
Not sure about a carbon frame being used off road, stone chips and dings etc.
    Any opinions, advice appreciated.
My current gravel bike was £800 four years ago and has been superb. I'm not bothered about it getting covered in mud, scratches etc. Don't want to become precious se over a fancy one.
