Too cold to stop and take pictures but just averaged 21.75 mp* for 44 minutes at (approx average) freezing point, so distance was around 16 miles.** Hands have just come round, which was worse part of the experience. I rested them on top of bars and kept exercising fingers as would have been much worse. **battery bike obviously
Reading this forum mostly on my phone these days and trying not to use my glasses too much, hence I missed the subtlety of your *
Well done for getting out there. Just spin class for me this morning. Claustrophobic, crowded, germ ridden and sweaty. Not unlike a Ryanair flight...
Much kudos for getting out, it was too cold for me today so did 10 miles on the spin bike, no fun whatsoever but useful for my diabetes control.
Bicycles and sub zero temps are not necessarily a good mix. Have a friend still not right from a broken shoulder blade from an ice related off, now two years ago, unlikely to be 100% again…..
I also have a friend who found black ice when out and despite two ops his wrist is problematic five years later.
I ride a short distance everyday to the gym and back, the only exception being if the weather is really bad. When cold and icy, I'll stick to the the gritted roads, avoiding my usual more bike friendly alleyways ect.
I’ve been out in when I was younger but it’s just not a sensible things to do as above the risk of a long term injury just isn’t worth it. Seen runners out earlier the mad fools, one decent slip and a plugged ligament will be weeks to mend rather than sit it out for a day or 2.
Thank you, it was a bit mad but the benefits outweigh the risks at the moment and that's the thing about us all being motorcyclists as well as bicyclists, as we scrutinise the road ahead automatically, particularly if you ride in muddy conditions as much as on "London tarmac". Would think nothing of riding a motorcycle on partially icy roads 15 years ago, but those days are over - now that's risky.
Was out a couple of years ago on my KTM in Wales with the ice warning light on the dash and snow either side of the road up in hills. Not something I’d be up to nowadays though.
