The Cyclists/ebikers

  1. I had a crash-course on those new fangled (for me) headstock bearings, I found some a bit harder to source, wear out quick if not checked and easy to go out of adjustment. Also found the only way to get the old cone off the forks was to use a grinding disc and then hammer and punch as no room to get puller jaws behind it. Sounds like you've done them before so probably a stroll in the park.

  2. Managed to average around 14.8 mph for 10 miles which is a record for me, and shows my core strength is finally improving despite still being half a stone overweight from Christmas.

  3. Do you know the history of that ridiculous contraption? Why on earth is it so high up??

I had a fascinating meet with a Penny Farthing rider in Wandsworth about 4 years ago. It did take him a while to master and said he broke one or both wrists during the learning period.

  6. That sounds pretty scary to me, when people describe life changing injuries just from riding them normally! I just had a read up on Quadracycles on Wikipedia and found it very interesting, dating back to 1853 in New York, one was described as having 192 gears.

  7. Looks like just a 'nip up' was required. Pumped the tyres up yesterday and took her for a quick run around the block. I've never done the 'racing bike' thing before, some adjustments are going to be required...o_O Bike its self appears fine, see how I get on.
Tyres went down again, so 2 new tubes are on the way, along with couple brake blocks,

  8. I think those bearings are a bit strange to adjust compared with the old-fashioned larger ballbearings, and hard to determine when they are too tight, you probably do the same:- put on the front brake and move bike backwards and forwards hard to see if any play for starters. When cups/cones/ballbearings are "worn" you won't always be able to remove play like conventional headstock, they just stay sloppy.

  9. DarleyAbbey1B.jpg I was supposed to be in the Lakes this week; 3rd time it's been cancelled, so making do with doing local stuff.
A very leisurely 27 mile ride on the trusty MTB starting from home and all done before it rained! :grinning:

  10. His website for his frame building, restorations and repairs.

    https://pinkertonclassiccycles.co.uk/

His workshop is full to the rafters, he even had a couple of Derneys in his workshop.

  11. If you’re referring to headsets that are ahead you can feel if they’re not adjusted properly as you’ll feel the play under braking. I just nip mine up should the need arise. They’re that cheap now you just throw away and buy new.

  12. Looks like just a tighten was required. New inner tube needed for the rear (ordered), and front brake blocks. Given it a lube up, all seems in pretty good order. Also been fiddling/adjusting (getting rage) the front derailleur, be bloody easier tuning a grand piano!

  15. Just thought I'd drop in on this thread & say "Hi", as I've been a keen cyclist again for the past 4 years and last year managed nearly 5,000 miles (pre-lockdown was about 3,000). I live in the flat lands in the Vale of York.

    Here's my current bikes.

Carbon Synapse Ultegra on Hunt Aero 50's, in the Appenine mountains, near Montefigatesi (close to our gaff in Bagni Di Lucca)

Scott Genius 720 on 29's, lots of fun and very versatile

Specialized Diverge A1 CX/Gravel bike, now on Mavics, another good all rounder, Mrs B also uses to join me every now and again for bimbles.

I'll have to scan through this thread when I've a bit more time.
