The most spine-tingling engine sound - ever.

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Chris, Dec 24, 2012.

  1. Merlin is my fave too, only rev'd to around 3.5k.

Love the Shell advert and Rendevous, in the same vain Steve McQueen in Le Mans

Le Mans 1971, Steve McQueen *HD* + subtitles - YouTube

Skip through to 1:31:00 and watch the final race sequence a classic IMHO

If you like it get the DVD must be cheap as chips and its a great movie

  4. remember a lancaster plus 2 spitfires flying off from southampton airport 10 odd years back and doing a fly over in eastleigh before heading over to the solent for some celabration or other, most amazing sound i shall never forget

  5. That looks a bit like Sammy Miller, he took the V8 to the Northwich Thunder Sprint last year, sounds very nice stood next to her.

  7. I think I saw this flight from the deck of a ferry, on my way to Saint-Malo. It was a hell of a sight.

  11. I get the very same emotions when anything powered by a Merlin or a Griffon flies past, that overwelming sense of wanting to blubber.Makes me think of my late father.:upyeah:

  12. If I win the euro lottery ill try and persuade one of the few owners out there to sell me one of these for the odd track day and rev up in the garage to annoy everyone living within 1 mile of me.

Overtakes the camera car at 0.35 into vid.

  13. I love the sound of the Merlin engine as well. If you go to the Duxford flying legends display in July you get to hear an awful lot of them, At the end of the display they have a flypast of all the participating aircraft at once.To display my saddo credentials I have two LP's of the TT in the 60's and one of the 67 TT. Listening to a five cylinder 125 changing down about ten gears then accelerating away is pretty awesome. Think it had 13 gears in the box

  14. I have the same LP.

  15. 275GTB (could be a GTS - it was the hard top version) v12 - my dad drove one a few times - took me out in it and floored it up Park St in Bristol.....never seen so many heads turn...

However when I read the title I thought someone had a video of someone's engine throwing a rod...

  16. I've worked on merlin and a griffin engined spitfires on work experience, they are fantastic peices of engineering and the sound up close is staggering.

For cars i have a real love of group c endurance racers, the Porsche 917k flat 12 is an incredible sounding engine.

Mind you the 20b quad rotor in a Mazda 787B is a pretty fantastic sounding lump, like satans flymo

  17. In real life it would have to be the MV3 500 at Donnington a couple of years ago. Merlin V12 a close second.
Am I the only person in the world who finds the Honda 6 just irritating?
