The Rossi Appreciation Thread .......

Discussion in 'Racing & Bike Sport' started by Dibble, Aug 5, 2021.

  1. An interesting quotation from the BBC piece on Rossi's retirement announcement:
"Rossi, whose Grand Prix career has spanned 25 years, is the only rider in history to win World Championships in 125cc, 250cc, 500cc and MotoGP."
It's also worth remembering that he also competed, and won, in world endurance racing.

  2. GOAT, LEGEND......what he has done for the sport no one could ever match. Even non bike fans know who Rossi is!! One of the most famous sportsmen in the world!!

Definitely not a 'woofer' as you put it........have you seen his bird ???

  4. That was the dude whose - ambition outweighed his talent - supposedly, according to Stoner anyway.

  5. Maybe Peter Hickman would be a better comparison?

  6. Fair comment, but no-one turns up and rides in Moto2, Moto3 and MotoGP on the same day???

Guess you can tell where my interest lie!

  7. I doubt it would possible because all those Moto 2 & 3 riders also need to put in the same amount of hours with their teams. Any rider who tried to compete in all 3 classes would automatically only be able to devote 33% of their time and attention to each of them, but most likely even less than that due to logistical issues and timetabling clashes. For example, while they’re out on track for Moto 3 free practice, all their MotoGP rivals would be spending time with their mechanics/physiotherapists/psychologists/telemetry printouts trying to find more time, which would put them at an immediate disadvantage.

It’s a totally different world these days. Have you watched the Dovi documentary? A race weekend is just utterly relentless, not just physically but mentally too, with very little spare time as it is without trebiing the amount of work required of a rider.

  11. Yes, the amount of cars/vans sporting VR46 he has a lot of followers who want you to know they are. Nothing for the other racers in GP or any other sports I can immediately state. He’s probably got more followers worldwide than some Premier League football teams. Just shows his global pull as an individual sportsmen, he’ll be a big hole to fill in MotoGP fan base wise.

I may even try and get to Silverstone for his last U.K. race.

  13. I guess he does, however I only have a passing interest in motorcycle sport so won’t comment on how successful he is/has been.

Rutter is another who springs to mind, but that might be bias on my part as he’s kinda a local.

  14. That's odd.
Usually by now with these types of threads, they'd be some annoying Aussie banging on about Mick Doohan...:D

  17. Mugello 2016 when Rossi's Yamaha motor went pop with smoke billowing out of it, and he had to pull out of the race - about 1/3 of the fans in the grandstand got up and left !
