Thin-walled Plug Socket Reccomendations

  1. Thanks @Red998
If I couldn't just buy one that is already made to that spec and recommended to work by another forum member, I would do exactly that but CR is using and recommending a Sealey socket that I can just order for six quid or so, job done.

  2. The coil arrived from ebay today. Ripped it out of the packet, excitedly stuck it in the bike and - hey presto - Ducati V-twin single... :'(

I'm wondering if it could simply be the plug, so have ordered the Sealey thin-walled socket recommended by CR and paid extra for 24 hour delivery, so I can get it out. My filed and cracked oem plug spanner was good enough to get it in but not to get it out again...

Would a failed plug give the same symptoms and error code??

  3. Measured at just over 22mm which presents me with a dilemma, what have I got that will fit my 1098R ? Out of interest, I did ask if there was a Ducati specific tool and the answer was yes, £145 !!!! but it is discontinued. Andy

  4. Just ordered one there myself :upyeah:

  5. Better get one of those Sealey ones I've ordered at six quid then.

Link as above in CR's post - the second link after he'd checked his PayPal history...

  6. They'll be running out - didn't have many when I ordered...

  7. Bugger! Just checked and that's a 16mm - don't we need 14mm?????

  8. Ok checked my sockets. 16mm is what it says on the oem spanner, so hopefully it's fine. However, the Halfords plug spanner says 10mm on it, no wonder I'm confused...

CRs link is from his original order and that fits, so all should be fine - phew....

  9. I use a Halfords Pro socket no issues , purchased as part of a set when they first came out .

  10. Andy,
1098 is not such a tight fit as 749/999 as the head is different. As I said, I had no probs at all with a standard no frills socket on my 1098 whereas I had issues with my 749 getting a socket to fit.

  11. I had the Sealey thin-wall socket arrive and it is wafer thin.

Works a treat - highly recommended!

Herewith side by side pic of Halfords Professional plug socket and the Sealey

  15. Hope you appreciate the wheely bin in the pic :)

  16. So what stops the Halfords one going down the hole - as mine does. Am I just good at getting big things in small holes? :innocent:

  17. The hole is tapered.
The Halfords one is fine if you have Champion plugs but other plugs have the hex flats further down the plug body towards the electrodes than Champions.
This means the socket fouls the taper and can't reach the flats properly

  18. Both mine must have Champion plugs then :)

  19. If a Halfords Professional plug socket reaches, then yes.
