Hey no need to apologise, without you guys I'd have had to take it somewhere and pay god knows how much in labour to get it sorted out so I'm very grateful to everyone for their help I think it backfired on start up and then that blew the body up as it wasn't secured tight enough on the clip then. 14t front sprocket, oil and filter change, aftermarket clutch slave next and I'm going to do them all myself !
My 996 backfired upon start up for the first time the other day and I have to say I shat myself. Sounded like a gun going off. With regards to the items next on your list. Definitely get a K&N filter. On my 996, it always weeps oil around the stock filters unless I torque them up. Problem then is, once torqued up they are a nightmare to get off. (even with using 5 different oil filter tools). This last oil change I switched to the K&N so I am hoping it will be easier to get off with the nut they weld onto them. Also, with the 14T front sprocket, you will find it makes a world of difference - but watch the chain on the front of the swing arm - they can start to eat through it if not adjusted correctly. Ive ran a 14T front on my 996 for the last year and have just decided to switch to a 15T front and a 42T rear. Stock rear is 36T. Reason being is that even with the 14T front I still found I never used 5th or 6th gears. Id be cruising along sometimes thinking I was in 5th and id really only be in 3rd. The gearing on the 996 is mad.
re: backfire, have known many bikes to blow their inlets off at the weakest link, it was because i'd already asked about coughing and misfiring that I didn't give it a second thought - as already said, if that is a common occurrence then I would lose the ITG filter if it were me.
150 miles on the 996s is back to rude health and my fast idle button works Massive thanks for everyone's help on this one.
