899 Too Nice For Track?

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Advikaz, Sep 14, 2016.

  1. What happened to thrill, excitement, speed and taking it to the limit?! ; )

  2. I can't say that anyone has ever said that to me.... I must have a really scruffy looking 959!

  3. Buy it, rag it, sell it :)

  5. I don't think any bike is too nice to take on track. Personally I think this type of comment comes from people who couldn't afford to write their bike off at a track day, me included. I don't want to have to increase the cost of track days by taking out dedicated insurance - which in most cases stipulate huge excesses. I also take it all a bit too seriously and really want to push myself, I'm not someone who just wants to wobble around for the experience, so in my mind at some point I'm probably going to drop the bike meaning I'd prefer a dedicated track bike to do this on. It's a shame really as my 899 barely leaves the garage anymore.

  6. I think to do track days you don't just have to be in a position financially to be able to crash it and do a couple of hundred pounds worth of damage to fairings and clip ons etc you have to be able to stand a complete loss, and if you can't and that's your only bike it'll be sad times as you're not covered. Yes road riding has more hazards and you can crash just the same but on the track you push it and you push your luck that's how good riding gets better and you only find your limit when you've pushed it too far.

  7. Or do what I've seen countless people do...

Push it out on to the road and call their insurance company sounding surprised....

  8. I suppose it is down to how you approach trackdays. I go faster, but not because I'm pushing my limits. In fact, the way I look at it is I'm just more cautious on the roads. I'm not racing or trying to break any lap records... I'm just out enjoying what the bike can do. I suppose I could come off, but not because I'm pushing my limits.

  9. Early mornings.....I work sunday mornings (usually out the door at 5.30am) - if you want to go fast that's the time to do it...virtually nothing around...id love to do a track day but its either that or 5 days at the tt so the TT wins as the draw of the mountain section is too much (and the newly tarmacked coastal road just out side of Port St Mary)

  10. You're absolutely right. My trouble is that no matter how much I convince myself that I wasn't going to push it out on track, I know as soon as I head out I will!

  11. Ron haslam said if you can't afford to fix it don't ride it.

Otherwise it's only a machine and was meant to be ridden.

  12. IMG_2646.JPG track.jpg I bought an 848 evo special edition in 2013 and tracked it a couple of times before I decided I couldn't afford to bin it! At nearly 14k for the bike it was just too much cash to see cartwheeling through a gravel trap.

I ended up buying a 675 Daytona as a dedicated track bike. The bike was £2600 and I've added slipper clutch, quick shifter etcetera etcetera! If I should bin it at least one can strip all the trick bits off and sell to recover most of the cost or afford to repair it as it's not got to look 100% like the 848 would have to. I'm much more relaxed and miles faster on the 675 as a result

And on the plus side I've got another bike in the garage.....always good :grinning:

I'd love to track the 848 eventually. It's getting closer to the price of the Daytona all the time

  13. That Daytona looks very nice!

  14. Yeah that's the problem! It was a nail when I bought it and I've done loads to it. Almost too nice to track now :tearsofjoy:

  15. I think the trick is to buy something you don't actually like.

  16. I've always thought that.

Treat it like someone else's girlfriend.
