Touring with the small sporty screens

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by ojobear, Apr 29, 2012.

  1. Just returned from a 1000 mile round trip to the Nurburgring via France and Belgium on my M696 which has a very small sport bikini screen. Most of this unfortunaley involved long motorway stretches. Upto 80ish no probs just a bit of buffetting that was bearable. 85+ was more of a challenge and a little uncomfortable but then everyone has differing levels of tolerance.

  2. Morning All! Screens are such an emotive issue....what works for one doesn't work for another, so my DP smoked Touring screen (genuine) is going into the classifieds if anyone is interested. For some people it is "the cure" for the whistling and buffeting, for others it isn't. For what it's worth, I'm 6ft, with 34" legs and Aztec spacers (don't ask ;-) ) ...for me, and for what I have tried, the MRA X-creen double works "best", although it isn't perfect. I suppose the Arai RX-7 doesn't help, but the usual applies...stand up above the screen and the whistling goes! Shorter screen? Yes, for slower speeds. For longer distance touring? Well, horses for courses, but it is better to have some protection I think....

  3. "Screens are such an emotive issue" ...........subjective even lol - I agree although there are some in general that are 'better' than others (more efficient air flow, less turbulence [noise!] etc) and the Aztec spacers get the thumbs up from most. The forthcoming CP Wings should be interesting ;-)

I can live with being in the wind it's the turbulence/noise I can't stand.......I did a DIY shorty screen that I really like, I only swap it out for a taller screen (PUIG) for long trips (and carry the shorty in my luggage to swap back at my destination! .....how vain am I?! lol)
By the way there's a new PUIG screen going to be available any time now.....test reports are good.

    ...more on my screen here.

Brian, that's your bike?..........happy with the finish?
I saw one of his early efforts and tbh there was no way it was going on my bike, cloudy patches in the lacquer and the finish of the back was REALLY rough.....looked a right DIY job. He says he's sorted quality issues..........waiting to hear from BobC who lives locally and is going to check them out.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  4. No no, emotive.... people can get quite emotional about it, and the subject stirs up a lot of mixed feelings! ;-) Subjective too though.... I think just about the only thing everyone agrees upon is that it is the turbulence that is causing the grief. For me, the wind hits around the collarbone, and causes turbulence/noise in the helmet....I would "guess" that the wind is coming from around the sides of the screen, so it is a screen "width" issue, rather than a "height" issue. Anyway..... winglets? Not heard that one... nor about the new Puig screen. Trouble is, you end up with screen fatigue....so many screens to try, so little money to pay for them all!! ;-)

  5. Not my bike Andy. I am more than happy with the MRA dark touring screen.

  6. Ok, thanks.

Ok, emotive for some.....I can understand that now just didn't get it at the time! :upyeah:
Yeah, 'what screen' is one of those topics where there never seems to be a definitive answer.........I had a GS12 and there were at least as many after market screens available, various DIY and other screen modifications and 'add-on bits' and more discussions than you could shake a stick at.
    CP Wings - See:
    http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f6/my-quest-quieter-ride-1177/
New PUIG screen - still waiting on more details but shorter than their current 'race' screen (which is pretty tall) and a change in design that makes it more effective apparently.

  7. Yes, I know what you mean.....it's both. It's an emotive subject, but the solutions (CP's research aside) are generally subjective! ;-) Anyway, the CP wings look very interesting (I read the whole thread over on Ducati.ms, along with the one for the Vstream), especially as Yamaha have something very similar for the New Tenere, and the GS has some too... Let's see what happens there. I could be interested in the new Puig screen....it looks like that or the medium (?) Vstream....I'd rather try the CP wings first though....you never know, the MRA x-creen double may be really good with them, and negate the need for another screen!

  8. PUIG Sport (Short) Screen

(Opening comments refer to something said elsewhere;-)
Your comments/experience really surprise me.....buffeting from the PUIG Sport/Shorty Screen?!...worse than the stock screen??!! That's just weird :confused:I know there are any number of variables (not least rider size/height, helmet brand/model, weather conditions) but I just can't get my head around anyone experiencing more 'buffeting' from the PUIG than the stock screen.

I fitted a Light Smoke PUIG Sport Screen for testing at the weekend and rode 180+ miles of varied country and fast 'A' roads including a spell on a private road  for testing at 3 digit speeds.
No back to back testing with a stock screen as I used mine to make my own DIY sport/shorty....but I recall only too well how keen I was to ditch the standard screen because of buffeting and turbulence....my DIY shorty is a major improvement, windy obviously (good helmet [Shoei Qwest] and ear plugs a benefit;-) but good clean air flow.
The PUIG short screen was better still, REALLY smooth air flow off it, NO turbulence or buffeting. I guess the 'double bubble' type shape of the screen helps.
('Buffeting - obviously you'll get some buffeting regardless of screen in certain conditions such as gusting cross winds or passing through a big truck 'wake')

A big thumbs up from me :D

I guess I'm a bit vain lol..........my DIY screen is going back on purely as I like the look :D
I'd like to see photos of the Dark Tint PUIG please.....anyone?

  9. Anybody know of a uk stockist for these please.

  10. Ordered a Puig sport screen last week from BR Special tuning PUIG Racing Screen Ducati Multistrada 1200 2010-12 | Motorcycle Exhausts | Performance Parts

I did a diy job on my standard screen, cut 5.5 ins off it, took the Aztec spacers off and the difference was amazing for me at 5ft 8ins. I can put up with the wind pressure as I've always had naked bikes, but the lack of buffetting makes riding the MTS a pleasure. To be honest I was on the verge selling it, every ride was a miserable experience despite Aztecs excellent spacers and I always ended up with a headache. In august I'm off to France for a week with the Puig screen or my diy special so will report back then.

  11. Sorry to drag this up again, I will soon me collecting my bike and as part of the deal I have the Plexiglass screen from the touring pack coming with the bike, from my test ride I know the standard screen is awful, I have got endless amounts of money to try out on my different screens, so I have a couple of questions.

    1. Has anyone used the Ducati touring screen and is it any better?
    2. In terms of aftermarket, the ones I have seen and identified as possibles are the Puig short, Fabbri Short and MRA short, any of these get rid of the buffetting problem?

  12. Can't comment on the Ducati screen, but every single after market screen I have ever risen behind has been worse than standard. I can only assume its an aero critical part. I rode an RF600 with a comparativley mild double bubble and the turbulence it created felt like it was going to rip my head off at 70. With the standard screen on it was perfect.

  13. So your staying the standard has been the best for you? That seems to be contrary to everything else I have read?! lol

  14. Had the same problem re wind noise, bit embarrassing when commuting on the train. Tried the standard with Aztec spacers which helped slightly but went for an MRA touring. Needed a new lid at the time and after trying a couple settled on the Schuberth S1. For me this combination works and the majority of the time the noise and turbulence is acceptable. Did a 1500 mile trip to the South of France and at times I wondered what all the fuss was about, however with a strong crosswind the problem returned until the wind died down or changed direction. Again at times just leaning forward a couple of inches the noise stopped totally but would soon get uncomfortable. Jumping on my mates Z1000 there was no noise or turbulence but siting at three figure speeds for a period of time was knackering.

To sum up each screen has its pros and cons and they are also so dependant on your body shape or how you sit on the bike.

  15. That clears things up then

It's like a bloody minefield this

  16. No probs, after all that's what forums are for:wink:

  17. I started with a standard screen, added spacers, changed to a Puig double bubble, removed spacers and generally buggered around with height settings etc.

Some combinations were better than others, and I was fine with the Puig TBH, except that in the rain on a high setting the water used to run down the screen which created a strange view which I found disconcerting.

When I had my bike repainted in the Pikes Peak scheme, I swapped to a dark MRA shorty to complete the look.

Wish I'd done it in the first place, as the improvement is huge.

Obviously you get a bit of wind pressure on your head and neck, but you get used to it within a hundred miles or so, and the whole experience is much smoother and free from buffeting.

I've held on to the touring screen in case I do a big trip with a pillion, but for everything else I'll stick to the shorty.
(I do not ride the Multi in shitty weather though, which I guess might show up the downside of the low screen).

  18. Did 3500 klms in October on the PP w/the PP screen. Fully up and combined with a customized lower PP pilot seat (I'm 5' 7") no probs at legal speeds or a bit over (120k/ph) over that though you do really start to catch some serious air.

It's a real chore at sustained 180k/ph+. You're knee grippin' like a rodeo rider :)

Rain no real issue either. Very happy.
