To be fair to Phil, he has had some bad press. But many of the guys I know who’ve used him are happy with the bike. His claimed power figures are often what is joked about. His dyno is definitely enthusiastic. My pal has a full seton build from him that was apparently 230bhp on his dyno and it seemed to mysteriously make 186 ish on any other dyno lol it’s stuff like that, which sometimes means that setons name being mentioned results in smirks. There’s also been a handful of instances of other engine builders calling him out, one I recall a little while back about dangerous timing on r1’s which was causing them to detonate. I recall he may have done a video about the snapped crank issue as well that was questioned a fair bit. If I was running an r1 I’d used Craig at CF motorsport. But everyone will have an opinion
I had my GSXR done by Gav at MSG. He told me right up front he was not bothered by the ultimate power figures. He could give me more power but the fuelling would be compromised. He wanted the fuelling right through the whole rev range. That’s what he concentrated on and boy did he deliver. Made a massive difference to my bike. Admittedly he is pretty much a GSXR specialist but I was, and remain, a super satisfied customer.

Silverstone today was so hot! Drank 6.5l of fluids and only went for 1 piss all day! Was a kid there who is 17th on the moto2 grid so way down the pecking order on a basically standard R1 doing 2.10’s in traffic! I think the lap record is Marquez doing a 2.01… Really goes to show the difference from decent trackday pace to world class racers. I managed a 2.25.9 so a few seconds off, considering it was 31deg I’m happy with that but so much more to go.
Top riders are another breed. Tom Booth-amos (world Supersport) was at Anglesey this weekend at the no limits racing round on a previous gen zx6r and was doing better lap times than a mid pack British Superstock rider on a ZX10. Granted, the track is a bit go kart ish, but still ....
He was at oulton last week and he was just sublime to watch, backing it in, siding, leg out , wheeling…. Incredible! A pleasure to be overtaken by
Ahh man, I can’t do bikes in heat. I just want to sit in a fridge when it’s that sort of heat. i got heat stroke at lemans years back. Absolute misery in leathers.
I did Brno a bit back and it was ridiculously hot. Front end sliding about under braking. Felt weird. And not good….
I coped pretty well to be honest, a lot better than I expected. Have been cycling to and from work in this heat though so I think it’s given me some hot weather training!
Not sure about that, more like how’s that fat bloke overtaken me?? I was at donny in the heat yesterday, in a very very steady (slow) paced fast group, had some issues with the bike through the day, but was a good day despite the heat.
One of my fondest racing memories was the first time and hopefully he doesn’t mind me saying that I came across Gaz Evans on track. It was at Anglesey and I was having a battle with a friend of mine Sean Kenyon. I’d been double stinted and was hanging out my ass. We were slowing each other up tbf lunging the fuck out of each other. I was out of the seat at peel and landed on the tank smashing my nuts. Sean came past gesturing to me… needless to say he was out the seat the very next lap and it was role reversal ! Lol As we kept ourselves busy with the medi centre very much becoming a likely feature in our afternoons.. gaz came past me… gaz is a big fella, lovely bloke too. But absolutely swallows a 600! I remember thinking to myself “absolutely fucking no chance” and biting down on the screen giving the 600 the biggest bumming it had ever had from me. Nearly crashed the thing at every available opportunity out of pride just trying to get back past Gaz haha. Luckily for me, he ran on at rocket before I sent myself to orbit
