  1. Sorry if this is off topic slightly, but is that the result of something catastrophic, or just general build up? I assume something exploded from the size of the debris.

When I changed the water pump on my 899 a few weeks ago, I drained the oil and put it back in as it was only ~600 miles old. However, it's not a track bike. The oil was left in the container (covered over) for about a week and I had a bit of orange dust at the bottom when I put it back in.

I obviously didnt put that orange stuff that back in. The orange material wasn't magnetic and I assume its come from the orange cogs?! It didn't have a gritty texture either. I replaced my water pump and other gear with new plastic ones but see no obvious signs of wear just to be safe.

EDIT: The sparkles are the overhead lights, nothing magnetic in the oil.

I reckon they become damaged as there is no dampening on the train of gears. And contrary to Internet wisdom they aren't sacrificial if the water pump seizes......

  6. Fwiw checked the suction strainer on my 959 this winter 7300 miles only 1 track day though
All I found were pieces of three bond which they used to put the sump and other covers on with when assembling the engine oh for the days of gaskets

  10. Can anyone clarify if these are still used on the V4 engines ?

  11. They’ve upgraded them to a fine blend of Italian toilet tissue and dried tears of a 1000 virgins

  12. A cynic would say “Well that depends on your design brief”.
It does not work out too badly for Ducati so long as owners accept it as part of the Ducati experience.
Costs nothing to produce, lasts long enough for in- warranty bikes, increases service income over the life of the bike. IMO this is where you really see the influence of VAG on Ducati.

  13. 999 gauze filter is really easy to check. Just saying......

  14. Cbr929 needs the whole sump removing
