Trackday Vw Transporter Advise Wanted?

Discussion in 'Trackdays & Rider Skills' started by Phill748, Aug 9, 2021.

  1. I've just sold my Transit custom that I bought new in February and WBAC gave me £500 less than I paid for it. There is a long waiting list for new vans because of the semiconductor shortage.

  2. I'll check these out, thanks for the tips. Yeah, I am not sure exactly what head unit it has but it's the OEM with touchscreen, and NAV/DAB and has the App Connect and even the reversing camera, so I'm not inclined to rush into changing that. But it will be nice to upgrade the OEM speakers, and perhaps a small sub, but will see about that.

I have a mate that's a VW pro, I'm going to get him to do a cambelt on it even though they are servicing it, just for piece of mind as they aren't doing the cambelt

  3. I'm HOPING that I've bought fairly smart.... as smart as you can with vehicles. I borrowed the money from my parents as it's basically no interest, and I've bought one that's higher mileage (99k) but immaculate and brilliant spec, so providing I keep it clean for 2 years and pay off chunks, I'll hopefully have something that holds it's value really well. I now WFH 3-4 days a week, so mileage wise for the daily grind it will be WAY under average mileage so in 2 years hopefully I'll have an 'asset' that's really well specc'd and also under average mileage.

    That's my man maths anyway....

  4. Slightly different but a client I have bought this £130,000 Senzati Merc V-Class conversion so his kids could get to school “comfortably”....

Top spec ones are £250k and the profit margin on it is around £150k, which is outrageous.

  5. Thats the Discovery unit. Yep upgrade door speakers and the tweetwers in the A Pillar. You shall also want to add sound deadening to inside of door. There are how to threads with pictures for us thickos.

  6. The rear seats in my Vito are a 2+1 configuration. The single seat is obviously a doddle. The twin seat can be handballed alone but it’s an awkward fekin lump (not too heavy). I take it gingerly nowadays as my lower back is a bit fragile. Unlike 20 years ago when I’d try picking houses up… which is probably why my back is fooked now… doh…

  7. Yey! It’s P fukken Diddy!! :D

  8. Ah, cool, I would like to update the maps on the Sat Nav at some point so will be looking into whether that's possible. I looked under the floor behind the drivers seat and it's got the foil insulation and sound deadening in. I also note that it's got carpet in the front also, and additional floor mats, so it's fairly quiet tbh.

I drove a totally bog standard Kombi, that was £5k cheaper, same engine but manual, and it was MUCH noisier, echoed a fair bit and while it did feel a bit more lively, as the DSG box seems to keep the revs down a bit, I could hear the engine quite a lot at all road speeds. I was actually surprised in the difference in feel between the two

  9. Thats a result if deadened already. I did mine during that hot summer in 1st lockdown. I did the entire cab floor, the rear floor. Inside of all doors and tailgate and I did rear wheel arches on outside (under plastic covers). Plus I did entire rear cab walls. Probably weighs a ton now. Then I thermally insulated, replaced standard plastic panels with quality treated timber ones and carpeted them up. I am sick of the smell of that sound deadening stuff. I may have overdone it a bit, but I had 3 boxes of the stuff and I still have a few sheets left for the roof once the poptop is done.

The DSG is lovely isnt it? So easy to drive. Your bus shouldve come with a SD card for the sat nav. Its western europe I believe. Easy to update.

  10. Quite possible but brace yourself. I wanted my twatnav upgrading on a car and it was a £400 touch. Didn’t bother.

Cleaning my van the other day at a Shell garage/supermarket type place. Forgot to pop the passenger footwell mat back. Shot back and of course it was gone. Probably straight on eBay. Not priced one up yet but when I looked for it on evilbay they were ~£50 :astonished: ffs….

  11. You update the disco unit via an SD card. Find the backup file (soz cant remember where from), put it in t'other sd slot, go to settings and follow the instructions. Worked for me. But I dont use the sat nav much. Except once I get to the town I need for final address.

  12. SatNav in cars is pointless....

    Use Waze....

  13. How do I find out if it's got Apple CarPlay? It has AppConnect but not sure if that actually means it has CarPlay, knowing VW that's an additional extra! If it does I'll just use that instead of the factory nav most likely.

  14. TBH, the bluetooth works better than carplay. It just connects as soon as I get in bus. The carplay works via the aux, which for some reason vw put on passenger side of dash.

  15. I’ve not found the aux connection in my Vito to be that good, Bluetooth in my on Proace was pretty dammed good.

  16. My missus was out last night so spent the night watching YouTube videos on various mods/sound deadening etc. One thing I am tempted by is the upgraded light units, with better Projectors and Daytime running lights etc. I struggle a LOT with my BMW on bog standard headlights through winter. They are £500 though....

Currently just trying to sort out a variety of issues on the Vauxhall Mokka we have so we can get it traded in and not get totally turned over money wise.

  17. My T6 has the LED all round. pretty good, but I come from a life of lighting by Lambrettas and Ducati's. A candle is bright to me. Seriously, the LED conversion I believe is pricey but they are pretty good. Better than my Saab93 Aero.

  18. As with anything, I guess it's all about just seeing what it's like first, maybe putting some simple bulb upgrades first as I couldn't give a crap about strobing indicators etc.

One thing that is playing on my mind a bit... safety around having the bikes in the back with no bulkhead, I obv have a Kombi with seats that will come out so not super keen on putting a bulkhead in (or half) but is there any products out there like a simple bar that bolts across for safety?

  19. Ive not seen anything specific Phil. But I guess it comes down to how securely you fasten down your bike. Plus what kind of accident you wish to pre-empt. How far do you go?

  20. Modern LED’s are fabulous. I’m 56 now and my night vision ain’t what it was. LED’s are like a God send for me.

You mentioned the strobing indicators, like you see on Audi’s. Maybe it’s just me but I think they look daft.

Not much you can do regarding a solid bulk head. I use a purpose made front wheel chock and obviously tie down straps. Pretty solid set up. But as with every life choice, swings and roundabouts…
