I'm also exploring the idea of getting the bike sent ahead. Possibly to the south of France or Switzerland, Bikeshuttles service looks the best option for me. Could be cool to team up with some guys from here on the same 'shipment' and ride from Geneva to Misano together! I will only have 6 days off work and want to spend 3 or 4 in misano so don't like the idea of spending 4 travelling or rushing it. I do need to relax at some point! I could possibly take the van there with my Duc, and my brothers Daytona, however he wants to rent a ducati down there as he doesn't like the idea of riding his triumph around at WDW, scared he might get egged... by me. :smilingimp: Any recommendations on bike rental?
Cheers, had a look, a bit pricer than others and limited to monster or multi, brother is more a pani or diavel man!
Dogs, I'm 62 and have ridden there twice on 888 in '02 and '10 on 999. Went for 2weeks both times to catch the wsb and mgp before/after and did a mini tour during the week, Pisa Siena Florence are all a few hours away. Plus theres some nice stopovers enroute. We have stayed in Dijon Ulm Innsbruck Augsburg. We had an early start and do 1 stop there and 2 stops coming home. Easy.
OK looks like I am definitely taking the bike down in a van. Was planning on a large XLWB Sprinter and four bikes but looks like that is not likely now as two of the others don't appear all that keen, so it might just be me. The idea is to perhaps join a convoy of other vans that I know are going, perhaps meeting up with them at the Channel Tunnel on the evening of the 28th June. Route will be driving overnight from Calais, Ghent, Brussels, Luxembourg, Metz, Basel, arriving in Solbiate on the 29th. 100hp party at Tradate in the evening, then on the 30th, early start down to Bologna, and onto Misano, for early afternoon. Planning to stay in Cattolica and have booked a B&B already. Surprising how few have spaces for those dates already and hotels are filling up fast. Be interesting to know how many forum members are going or maybe organise a meet up once there. It's too busy to attempt it at WDW but unless I end up on one of the "Curve e Tornati" ride-outs, was going to suggest a short ride to Tavullia or Coriano for lunch maybe on the Saturday, barring any specific events people would rather attend at WDW that day. Yet to see the programme or an idea of when tickets will be available from Ducati.
Channel tunnel, hotels, tickets all booked now. Just have to finish re-assembling the wife's bike in time! It's currently in a hundred pieces or more. No pressure then. Until I see the itinerary of events, I may well be riding to Tavullia for lunch on the Saturday or Sunday. Would anyone else be interested? Will confirm nearer the time.
Having been to WDW twice, I can confidently predict that you will not want to hang around at the Misano circuit all day for three days. After a few hours you will want to get out and sample the nearby towns, villages and countryside, and most others will be doing the same. There are many great places, views, and roads within an hour's ride - my personal favourite is San Marino, but that's just me.
Yes been twice myself Pete, in 2000 and 2002 so I know there isn't enough there to engage you for the whole day, that's why I'm venturing out. I did one of the Curve E Tornati rideouts last time but as there is the two of us going, I thought it would be nice for the wife to see some of the local area, as I've covered it extensively having lived in Italy for several years. Been to San Marino but yet to visit Tavullia or Coriano. I only plan to stay at Misano for the staged events such as the trackside stuff, the mass rideout, evening concert and anything else that takes my fancy. It will be a juggling act either way.
This is what I was thinking. My brother had an idea to stay in san marino and enjoy the daily commute to misano for events whilst having a bit more going on in mornings and evenings around the hotel. Good idea or any other suggestions??
They right what their saying, WDW2014 was my first and I was kinda gutted I got round it in half n hour and I didn't get there until midday Saturday either and was please I didn't do the Friday... But hey I was here I force myself to come back for the evening do, the misano start finish line queuing ages just for a hotdog well at first I didn't know what was happening just follow the crowd to see. The evening show (in the stands) was only good if you knew Italian there was very little English but hey I thought stay I little longer, I think I stay 2/3 in before walking out and riding the bike back to the hotel... I went the Sunday but I also went to Tavullia and went round the Rossi fan shop n café and I also went to Coriano for the simoncelli museum... On trvelling to Coriano I was met by a 20ft gorge where the river wash away the road and had to do I detour and on return back I came to same road with gorge but on the other side... So its not the destination what counts its the journey, the journey there n back home... Suprising how many ppl where hanging out in their hotel or riding their bike around Cattolica or just every where other the main event... As the saying goes ''you only get out of something what you put in'' or summat like that, what some up WDW so low expectations don't expect much or if your a football fan, the highest religion going who love masterbating over Dukes then am sure you'll have fab time... My journey didn't end after that from there I did Piscara, Bari, Naples, Mt.Vesuvius, Pompeii, Rome, Park Of Monsters and then back to Livorno for the motorrail but some hours to kill I stop off at Pisa for all those tourist photos stop along the way all within the week... Am only going again to wdw2016, I trashed my bike a month before going to the 2014 one, and didn't have time to be scare of riding nor did have my transfers on the bike either so it was kinda naked...
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on routes to WDW this year, only ever flown to Italy. We live in Portsmouth and will take the chunnel. Depending on who I speak to through Germany or France is better, have you guys got any preference?
Nice, is that route doable in 3 days not all on motorways? Also what sort of regions could I aim for by end of day 1 and 2?
You would struggle to do that in 3 days without motorways. We went to Misano Motogp two years ago. Left Tuesday morning in the midlands and got to Cattolica late Friday afternoon. Motorways for Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday we stayed off them but didn't make our destination in Como. Friday motorways for much of the day. I guess it depends to a great extent where in the UK you start out and how many hours you are prepared to ride each day. Tuesday we got to Ypres by early evening. Wednesday made it close to B500 in Germany. Thursday got to Splugen in Switzerland. Friday to Cattolica.
You're right there, to give you some more info we will be Departing the Chunnel at 11:30am Sunday and hope to arrive in Misano by Tuesday eve. is it unrealistic to aim for Germany by Sunday night via motorways?
You should reach Germany by the end of the Sunday with motorways. Use Google maps as a guide but bear in mind they assume max speed is possible on the roads it recommends. You also need to stop for fuel both for you and the bike every 100+ miles or so which probably adds 15 minutes to every 1.5 hours or so. Certainly doable but it is a bit of a dull slog.
I've had some more time to think and have a better idea of routes. Some feedback would be ideal to point out anything that is obviously a bad decision, or any good roads along the way that are a must! I've chosen to go calais, via luxembourg, towards Karlsruhe using motorways to eat up the miles on the first day. Google Maps The next 2 days to Misano I have used a site called twisty roads to plan a route through the black forest and a few other good roads but it looks like it might take a bit longer than the 2 days we have. I don't mind being on some motorway but would like to enjoy the trip as much as possible. What do you think? TwistyRide: Motorcycle Route Planner, Road Trips, Motorbike Touring Any input is appreciated, Cheers.
Jordan, the first half of your route is not unlike my plan, albeit I'm taking my time and not slogging so far on the first day. I tend to aim to do around 250 miles a day touring, which allows enough time for petrol/Orangina/coffee/lunch/photo stops and still getting to my hotel at a sensible time in the evening (to allow time for a swim/beer/dinner). Sunday night I'll be in Vianden, Luxembourg, Monday night in the Black Forest (with a view to doing a bit of B500), Tuesday night Landeck, Austria and Wednesday night (like Topolino) staying just north of Milan to call in at the 100HP Club in Tradate. I'm pleased to see you've included the Fluelapass on your ride down (as have I). I much preferred the flowing Fluela to the hairpinny-cyclist&RV-infested Stelvio on a previous petrolhead trip to the continent. Depending on timing, you might want to consider on day 3 not taking the motorway south from Trento to Verona but instead heading a smidge further west and hugging the shore of Lake Garda. I imagine progress through the lakeside towns would be slow, but I'm led to believe it's beautiful. (I'll be in that area as part of my return journey from WDW).
