Tyres

  1. If only.

    I'd be a lot happier if there was an alternative that could be used for light off road riding and had the correct speed rating but right now there isn't one.
     
  2. The Scorpions are a compromise tyre designed to cope with all the different applications that the Multi could be used in.
    if you do not need to compromise, then get a tyre best suited for the application that you use. Personally I will not be taking my bike off road. I do commute,tour and track days. Therefore I have fitted Merz Z8s and very happy I am with them.

Ok Ok i seem to have unleashed a storm.... let me rephrase....the life expectancy on the scorpions is rubbish....if i compare them to the PR3's....I got just over 6k out of the scorpions, and they were Shot to pieces....in comparison I am at 4k on the PR3's and they still look good....ie like they still have another 4-6k left in them. see the photo above.
    What really worried me was that the scorps went from worn to canvas in a very short time/distance, which to me is a huge safety issue. (Ah and no comments from the H&S executive pls we know we should dispose of worn tyres immediately)
     
  4. I agree totally, mine lasted less that 3000 miles and were totally knackered. They also went from being ok ish to very illegal/dangerous in one 150 mile day out. If that mileage was on a sports based tyre i would understand but isn't it supposed to be a touring/do it all job.
     
  5. Agreed, Scorps are fine but don't last long. PR 3's seem to get good reviews but look shite. Just fitted Dunlop Sportsmarts, bloody great tyre, used them on my KTM and for me they are the tyre of the moment. :upyeah:

  6. I had Dunlop Sport Smarts on prior to fitting PR3's and will be going back to the Dunlops when next set needed.

    Very hard to quantify other than to say I preferred the feel and feedback
     
  7. Maybe its just me but when I had the original tyres on I thought the handling was just fine, 6K changed for PR3s thought they were fine also, 6k later the PR3s replaced with PR3s, In a blind test I probably couldn't tell one from the other.
     
  8. Multi & Pat, my last PR3 did exactly the same, went from looking like it would last a weekend and in a day was past the wear markers.
    I think a lot of it depends on how and where your riding. French roads seem to eat tyres.
    One of my mates took great joy in seeing how much more rubber I had used at each coffee stop :rolleyes:
    Still, I was having fun, and it doesn't come for free :cool:

    Not tried the sport smarts, so maybe I'll give them a go next.
     
  9. Same here and although I preferred the SportSmarts there is quite a trade-off when it comes to longevity....
     
  10. I think the roads in Scotland are very abrasive too. I went on a trip with the SportSmarts fitted, I was a bit worried they wouldn't last the trip and I was justified, they went very quickly down to the braiding :eek: and I really don't want to relive getting that tyre sorted....broken Oberon sockets etc etc....nightmare
     
  11. The roads in Scotland are very abrasive. I have a set of PR3 on and the rear is nearly worn out at just over 4,000. On the ST4s the best I could get was 5,000 with Angel STs and the worst was barely 3,500 with Dunlop Roadsmarts. Yet I rode to WDW12 and back on a set on Metzeler Sportec M3s (they were cheap) and they hardly wore in 2,700 miles, albeit much of it at a steady 80/90 mph.
    Back in the late 70's I wore out a Metzeler ME99 in a week riding around the NW highlands.
     
  12. Tyre fitter: bollocks. PR3's are dual compound. Check the Michy website. Awesome tyre.

  14. Mmm just to bump this thread.

    Has anyone got or used the Pirelli Angel GT's yet? And if so what did you think wear and gripwise? I realise Ducati fit them as standard on the GT so they must be happy with them.

    I've done 1500 miles on my new Multi now and i suspect the Scorpions wont make 3k miles.
     
  15. I was going to fit a pair last week but the rear 190/55 size isn't available in the UK right now, so I've just gone for PR3s again.

    Took mine in there today to get my rear puncture repaired and the gaffer offered me your old tyres if I was interested. No use to me at the moment. The back tyre he showed me looked no more than half worn. £50 was his opening gambit for the pair. If anyone's interested, I'm sure he'll go lower.
     
  17. I've just had Pirelli Angel GT's fitted. Initial thoughts..............very similar to PR2's and PR3's but it's early days yet.
    I am off to France next Saturday with wife as pillion for a week and then in late August to the Alps with the lads.
    I will report back.
