If we go down the route of saying that such-and-such a vehicle has to emit X in any given situation,then any modifications will be completely out.Many countries already ban tuning,pipe changes etc,it'll be us next... They'll bring in roadside testing,and that'll be another Government boot on your neck. Yesterday we had the public health headmasters on the radio,"all diesels should be banned,kids get asthma,25 billion early deaths because greedy folk tried to save money by buying economical cars"....ffs,this simplicity of argument makes me puke. They conveniently ignore all of the benefits that cheap mass travel and economical freight transport has brought to the Western world,(benefits that those lauded African migrants want to share)....never wondered why 60 years ago a three piece suite was a luxury was bought on hire purchase/Ducatis were a rich gentlemans toy?...but now people change furniture on a whim and you can buy a Duke for pennies a month with no deposit?.Well now you know,it's partly because of MODERN,CHEAP,TRANSPORT. Diesel vehicles are RELATIVELY cheap,and are RELATIVELY efficient,but are not without downsides...same as petrol,same as kerosene,same as steam engines,same as,burning wood,you don't get owt for nowt. IF this was about emissions,(it isn't),then every University/research lab/engine manufacturer in the world would be looking at Hydrogen fuel cells or whatever is the next best alternative.But they only eat air,and you can't tax air...yet.... Those taxes have to be collected though,so this current hand-wringing/finger-pointing-lip pursing-nonsense is part of the tacit understanding between the Media,Big Government and Big Manufacturers,that is to keep the greedy mouths of the public open for,"Bigger!...Better!...Faster!....More!",i.e,no new sales,no big tax receipts. Looked after and properly maintained,a modern diesel engine will outlive you or I,(my Mercedes has done 217,000 miles,still maxes.out at 140mph indicated and do 35 mpg with 5 persons on board),and there is the rub. If we look after all our shite and don't buy new there'll be no big money rolling in to make Chief Constables/NHS Execs/Judges/Head Teachers/top Civil Servants rich at the taxpayers expense,nor for those benefit-funded weddings and breast enhancements so beloved of the Daily Mail. The demonisation of diesel was inevitable at some point,no surprise,all the big boys drew straws and VW got the short one,everyone will be forced to buy petrol cars and up will go the tax receipts followed by the wages of the high ranking Public,"Servant". It's all about the money, boys and girls...always is,always will be...
Exactly. There is lobbying going on in Europe for only OEM servicing / repairs / type approval etc, the big motor manufacturers benefit whilst the minnows in the aftermarket world are put out of business. Unfortunately there is some logic to their argument, there was a thread on here regarding a failed aftermarket pushrod only recently, but if it is implemented then that will be another freedom lost forever.
