916 Varese Bikes - I Just Don't Get It - But I'm Coming Around

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by West Cork Paul, Jun 19, 2020.

  1. Maybe some of you guys know the answer. I’m trying to find out more about the markings on the early 916 heads esp the wee logo, here’s two pics of heads from an early bike date stamped 92 B308FA2D-5AF9-4482-B8D2-0249A303BCB6.png 00929B14-8988-468E-9373-8813AA3BAC75.png one without the logo and a (G) and FT the other has the logo and (B)

  2. Ive just bought one. At the risk of being flamed if anyone has encyclopaedic knowledge of them pls pm me

  4. I don’t get it, Why the really negative shit from a few just because some owners want to find out as much as possible about their bikes and have them as they want. Probably the same guys who when a man puts his bike up for sale rip it apart this isn’t right that isn’t right, just saying.

  5. Davyd, unfortunately there are some people (especially on this side of the pond) that tend to act in an elitist manner when it comes to the bikes built at Varese. This really tends to grind our (or specifically, my) gears.

I have a P8 Strada and am fully onboard with learning how the OEM spec evolved for the 916 through it's production run... but it certainly seems that "OEM spec" for Cagiva/Ducati in the mid-90's was a constantly moving object given the financial difficulties of the company.
For example, recently on this thread we've learnt that some early bikes had curved writing on the idiot lights, and some early bikes did not. A change of supplier due to the inability to pay the invoice the most likely reason.

So yes, let's keep the knowledge coming. But if I hear "Varese bikes were hand-built and Bologna ones weren't" one more time...

  11. For me it doesn’t matter where it is build, don’t care if it is bologna or varese.
I also not really care about there value,i never leave a bike stock.
But i think the reason that the ‘94 is a bit more sought after is just because it is the first made in the 9-series line.
That is also the case with the white frame SS bikes and with some other models.
The first build of a model are always a bit more sought after.

    Henk!!!

  17. Ducbird, what did I say that was not "Appropriate"?

  18. Back to the early 1994 916 topic,
I was told (by a big commercial player in classic Italian bike sales) that the production was switched back to Bologna in July 1994, is this correct? Is there evidence to support this or is this again opinion / thoughts with no substance?

  19. Falloon says no production 916's were made at Bologna in '94...

  20. Thank you TNR, that is what I originally thought and I would of been surprised that Mr Falloon would of missed a moving production date back to Bologna date information out if it were half way through 1994.
