Water In Engine Oil

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Cockneyboy1963, Jan 21, 2018.

  1. Thanks for that . It’s put my mind at rest a bit . I’ve never seen this before on any bike I’ve had . I build lambretta engine and have only seen this colour oil when a drive side oil seal has gone . Thanks for all the help

  2. No worries, I am fairly sure running it up a few times and letting it breath out the filler cap will fix it.

Top tip, after each ride when your temp is at about 62 degrees even in the summer, let it idle a bit when you get home (not each tie you stop), just to bring the temp up, saves that crap building up and looking as bad as it is.

PS, I think the little oil window is kinda double glazed or something, hence why tilting your bike or changing oil does not get rid. :upyeah:

  3. If you are that worried.... would it really hurt to do a mid interval oil change?

My sprinter van has 37,500 oil interval..... It gets done every 10K as the cost of oil compared to a new engine isn't worth the extended life oil price.
The oil coming out looks pretty f**ked to me.

  4. The 'window' has a metal plate just a few mm behind it, so the mayo gets stuck in the gap.

If you've seen it like that a lot then I'd change the oil and make sure the bike always gets up to temperature in future.

I had a similar situation years ago when using my Z1000H to commute to work 5 miles away.
I had to go home the (very)long way to get the engine properly warm otherwise the sight glass looked like yours in a couple of days.

    Nasher.

  5. Likewise my Discovery 3 has a 15K oil change schedule, but I change it and the filter every 7.5K.
The oil always looks like it needs changing.

  6. If you have a very short commute, I might be inclined to blank off the oil cooler for the winter but only the oil cooler.

  7. Water pump shaft seal gone, possibly. Don't run your engine on mayo.

  8. Thanks for that peteW . If A seal has gone on the water pump wouldn’t that mean that the filler tank would need topped up ? I’ve have had a look and it’s sitting at max . Cheers

  9. I guess you would see a bit of a drop. I don't know how much water it would take to make that much mayo. It was just a thought - I happened to be reading about the pump seal this morning, for my bike at least (996)
