Yup :/ Before my day but when I was a kid, you used to see cars with radiator blinds fitted, which were adjustable to blank off sections of the radiator. My Dad used to take the fan off the end of the crankshaft. We did live in Cornwall though, where there were no traffic jams in winter and few traffic lights.
