Well, thats’s the cover *loosened. Large amount of stuff the clear out of the way, including the vertical cyclinder vanity cover, which seems wedged (secured?) behind the frame. Unfortunately, I’ll have to remove the exhaust, silencers and rhs pipe to clear the cover. What I’ve discovered: water pump drive gears are metal, not plastic on this R. Fortunately, they appear unmarked, so that’s more £ saved. I’ve stopped for the day, leaving the exhaust fasteners soaking in WD40. I’ve had to saw through one clamp bolt as the socket was round and it stood no chance of loosening. Big weekly shopping day tomorrow, so it may be Friday before I proceed. Heigh Ho.
That was always my concern on doing this job... Its alot of work removing RHS pipe. Not sure if the R has the clamp fitting (like the 959 and 1299) or the 3 bolts (like the 899 and 1199) when connecting to the Y piece. If it's the latter the bolts often corrode and are stubborn to remove. I think you'll be lucky and have the clamp style fitting. Good luck!
Yes. Clamp on this one. Rusted to hell, and the hex hole rounded. Replacement ordered (from Italy) by Motorapido just now. I’d *hoped* to wiggle the cover past the pipe, no joy. And the pipe is too wide to flex, and I don’t want to damage that. Still, once that’s off, it should make offering up the cover with liquid gasket a lot easier.
Definitely best with the exhaust off unfortunately, otherwise you get sealant everywhere as you try and get the cover on.
Have you got the 1299 service manual as well as the 1199? The 1299 version is a little better - the graphics have improved - I’ll put a link up if you haven’t got it.

Latest update: back from “Big Weekly Shop” day, and I’ve managed to detach the RH exhaust, after dropping the silencer/s. Side cover now off, and water pump out. Off out with the dog then stock roundup time. Tomorrow should be cleaning the gasket goo off mating surfaces and starting refit.
Things wot I have learned so far: Thumbnail is the most effective for removing the sealant from the mating surfaces Removing the sealant to clean the surfaces has been the most time consuming element Removal of the exhaust pipe is necessary to remove and refit the casing It is possible to remove just the RHS pipe, albeit with some ignorance, and loosening of the silencer/s As you’re saving between £600 and £700 by doing it yourself, buy an ABBA Skylift or bike lift bench rather than fettling with the bike on the floor (like me) So that’s the new pump on, the cover replaced and everything torqued up. Starting to refit all the ancillaries and plastic bits next. Hopefully all the cables etc will go back in the same places I took pictures of when I dismantled. Now that I’ve got this far, it’s worth doing an annual service, albeit without the dealer stamp and the computer update.
Penultimate stage: I’ve done an oil change (other thread has details of that saga) and refilled the coolant. Check everything, wipe down all surfaces to check for leaks, big breath…turn key, and she starts-no nasty noises, no warning lights. Just the procedure to ‘burp’ the coolant system to do, then I can button up the fairing again and get back to normal.
Another “things wot I have learnt” Thing 1: Installing the water pump breather tube modification SRV-SRB-18-022, Ducati bulletin says use a short 2mm parallel drift to drive the nipple in. *The nipple hole is SMALLER than 2mm* so don’t go spending £ on a 2mm drift. I used a socket which fitted *over* the nipple and an extension to drive it in. Thing 2: don’t buy either of the Panigale 1199 or 1299 fitting kits for an ABBA Skylift/stand, ‘cos they don’t fit. Ring AbbaStands and they’ll make a special one to fit the adjustable swing arm on the Panigale R. Same price as the usual. Hope these help somebody.
@ibgarrow - I bookmarked this thread as I had to do the 899 water pump and finding it useful so far. Do you have any tips on removinvg the water pump? There are three tabs, but they are not easily accesible and Im struggling to break the silicone holding it to the casting on the engine? It seem stuck solid, unlike the clutch cover that moved easy enough.
I got purchase on the top rear tab on my Panigale water pump, although I appreciate your concern about the force required to dislodge it. I don’t know how similar the 899 and Panigale R pumps are, mind. I found this guy’s videos useful.
@ibgarrow - THANK YOU - I just stumbled across it whilst searching as your post came in. I beleive the parts are the same but we have plastic gears. For the benefit of others, I tried the alley key method but they didnt have enough force and one got stuck. I disocvered the best way is to use a long block of wood and a mallet to hit the underside of the old pump and it eventually came free and the excess coolant came out. From there, the allen keys became useful to leverage the last bit. My last hurdle will be putting the 1199 clear clutch case back on to the 899. I cannot get the RH pipe free after removing the termis cans, so I suspect Ill have to remove the rear subframe. I beleive the 1199R has the same exhaust as the 959/1299 so slightly different design which looks like it will free up with the cans removed. Thanks again!
I only needed to remove the RH silencer, which I managed to free from the Y junction and the front pipe junction. It wasn’t easy. The rearmost clamp had to be sawn off-put its replacement on *before* refitting the silencer, otherwise it’s a B to refit. (Mine are Akrapovic)
