Weighting Inside Or Outside Footpeg

Discussion in 'Trackdays & Rider Skills' started by nice1myson, Jun 14, 2015.

  1. weighting the outside peg when powering out of corners always feels right to me

  2. Probably because you are standing the bike up so your weight is shifted tp the outside

  3. It's also how you stop/control a rear wheel slide on an off road bike :upyeah:.

  4. Standing the bike up yes ,, but all weight still on the inside

  5. Well I generally put weight through both pegs most the time as this lowers overall centre of gravity. But weighting the inside peg has a tendancy to push the bike away from you to promote a slide, pushing the outside peg tends to push the bike down more to gain traction. As always though, unless racing and trying to find the last tenths of a second just being comfortable with how you ride is probably the fastest and safest way to ride.

  6. Surely it's the other way around. Inside means push bike closer to you increasing lean angle and less traction

  7. I believe the idea behind weighting the outside peg is more to do with grip than cornering. The bike has to be lent over in a turn to counter centrifugal force. The centre of gravity has to be moved to avoid the bike standing up. We hang off the bike to move the COG further over whilst allowing the bike to have to lean less therefore reducing the risk of riding off the edge of the tyre. On a race bike this also allows you to stand the bike up quicker and get on the gas. Watch the top riders and they'll stand the bike up on corner exit to get the power down whilst still hanging off the bike as it is still really in the turn. Stoner was a class act at it. The problem with hanging off is that with the weight on the inside the centripedal force going through the inner peg has a tendency to push the bike away. With the weight on the outer peg it has the effect off pushing the tyre down in to the tarmac thus increasing grip. This is why Stompgrip on the tank is used as this does a similar thing. That's what I was told anyway.

  8. totally agree mate,, but i find when cornering agressively there is no weight on the pegs at all,, the outside leg is hanging on to the bike not the pegs..

  9. I don't tend to weight the pegs on a sports bike, I do use the outside peg to push against and drive my knee into the tank. I find it gives me a more stable position in the corners and helps to keep my weight off the bars when I hang off the bike.

  10. Surely this whole issue is bike dependant ,,,, i cant see the same technique being used on a sports bike like a 749 or pani and a sit up and beg type like multi strada or goldwing .

  11. The principle applies to all, its simply the amount of force applied that changes

  12. even a push bike if you are going fast enough!

  13. Even there there are many different types of pushys , and riding a down hill mtb is nothing like riding a road bike , at any speed !!!

  14. you are going wide, down hill, leaning off the inside. Do you a) lean body and treader further and drop more weight inside and weight inside peg or b) lean body further inside, put weight on outside foot and lift bike up? I know which I do ;)

  15. i think weighing peg simply is counter balancing bar weighting, ie steering, not griping related.
fore and aft positioning effects grip more, but my dirty bastard spaniel has just farted and it f@cking stinks!

  16. What is counter steering? Can someone explain this please?

  17. It's what we all do just not what we think we do , I think that's right but it could be left :Wacky:

  18. Turn into a bend and take your hands off the bars ans you keep turning, it doesnt sit up or drop dowm unless you inflect a force on the bars. Riding a pushy no hands is easy because of low centrifugal force from the v light wheels and low overall mass.

  19. Counter Steering is "Black Magic" that's what it is :upyeah:!!!
