What Do I Need To Make A 1299 A Track Bike?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by PR36, Sep 10, 2015.

  1. How many teeth did you go up and is it worth changing the steering angle dodahs?

  2. The 1299 has the same 39 tooth rear sprocket as 1199.

Ducati Superbike 1299 Panigale - Tech Spec

    ;)

  3. Ah it's just the Panigale R then, I thought all the new ones had that final gearing. I found on the road that it coiled the bike up a bit. I woudn't recommend it unless you like to ride pretty hard or do trackdays but if that is the case then it's worth trying out. I thought it would cause more wheelies but it actually seems to make the bike wheelie less. It think because you end up using the gears differently. It will also use more petrol so I guess the range will go down a little if you care about that! On track its going to depend on the circuit. Almeria is the only one I've done on the new gearing and it was actually worse at the beginning and I wished I hadn't changed, I was never reaching a good spot in the power band. Once I got faster on the circuit it became just right and I was glad I had done it as I would have been running out of gears at just the wrong time on the standard rear sprocket.

  4. It's hard to say as I did the gearing at the same time and that changed my balance on the bike but I do think it made the bike more stable. I didn't have to clamber over the front quite so much to keep it on the ground in the fast corners. It's a cheap mod so worth doing I think.

  5. Oh, The 1299/1299S now has the 1199R lighter Ignition Flywheel aswell ;)
    (Part No. = 27610701A)

  6. @royalwithcream maybe you have lengthened the wheelbase couple to change of head angle so bike is simply longer and flatter

  7. Yes, that would make sense. It's a shame it's so much work changing between these things as it would be nice to be able to try both to compare on the same day. I just figured it was worth doing if Ducati has done it for all the new models.

I dont think I'm good enough to really notice the difference but one thing I did do was take @MissPineapple Triumph Daytona 675 out for a session at Almeria and it was amazing how much tighter turning that bike is (I'd like to know how the 899 (and new 954?!) compares). I didn't have any particular problem with the way the 1199 is as stock, I like the rawness, dont mind a bit of rhythmic head shaking and have never experienced the rear pumping that some reviewers complain about so doing the headstock changes was just because it looked to be recommended and the gearing was to try stuff out.

  8. Seriously considering a 675 for my next track bike. Something to carry corner speed on again and have no fear of the power. Or respect for it ;)

Fwiw riding the 899 at Silverstone made me make my mind up because it was so flickable and easy to ride fast. Sure it was down on power, gixer has genuine 170 hp at the wheel, but it was great to (within 2 sessions) be dragging knees, boots, pegs everything on those conti tyres and having fun

Can't stretch to an 899 tho so 675 or R6 will be next. Unless I can get a mega cheap V4 or RC8....

  9. I like the fun of the big bikes but the Daytona 675 would be my definite choice if I was going to a smaller capacity. They are stupidly capable for a small bike and amazing value. We went out at Cadwell with two mates also on 675s. One is more experienced than me having done some racing and the other has been riding for only a year (6mths less than me) and both were able to match me around Cadwell on the Triumphs. I'd out-drag them on the straights and they'd catch up in the corners.

By the way, I know someone selling a well setup ready to race 675 that would probably go for around £4500 if you are looking. I very nearly bought it myself but went for the KTM as I needed a winter capable road bike. The guy works with one of the BSB teams and has put a nearly new engine into it a couple track days ago.

  10. About in budget once I've flogged my kit.

I have done 1'50 at cadwell with 50 hp. Then on a TD with 170 only went a bit quicker (comparatively speaking). Gutting. Ok race takes 5 secs a lap min off for me, often more, but just shows...

A well ridden 675 by a decent club racer will be under 1'40. Same as a 600. And bet same on a 1000 may only be a second quicker.

Expect uses twice the tyres, twice the risk and demand point/squirt riding
