Enjoy your life now, whilst you are fit and healthy, if its not a every day runner then a 998s is very nice, howewever it depends on your local roads. I use my 996 nowadays for track use only, bought a Multi for the road, far more foregiving.
I always go for the 'R' bikes, but they are all northwards of your £12k now. So.......... 916SPS - Iconic shape and a special edition Monster R - I'm not sure how it'll fair on the investment side of things, but a bit left field Streetfighter S - A nice one is still a rare beast and great fun. If you can find a red framed titanium bike, these were the last of them. Watch for swelling fuel tanks. 749R - A Ducati dealer told me a couple of years back that if he had to have one bike, it would be one of these (He wasn't trying to flog me one at the time) 1198SP - Last of the trellis frame superbikes, loads of stomp and a hairy chested man's Ducati. Nice tank but a cheese gearbox. Panigale Tricolore - Cool looking bike, won't drop below what they are now imo.
HP2 is a beautiful bike with great detailing but not a good road bike, quite peaky, not at all comfortable, it's probably a good track bike as it needs to be ridden hard to make it come together and work properly. I couldn't wait to get back on my 998 when I had a go on a friends HP2 a few years back.
If you're using it and paying the associated costs then is it not fair to say that if you weren't spending money running your investment you would probably have another bike on the road which you would be spending that money on anyway so the running costs of the investment bike are somewhat out of the equation when calculating the financial gains.
A Ducati Monster S4RS is likely to hold value as that’s the final incarnation of the original monster with all the bells and whistles. Doubly so for a tricolore as that’s the model which Ducati “Copied” with the 25th Anniversary Special.
The way the worlds economy is going you may soon be able to get a whole Desmo for £12K...... Being sensible though, I’d have a mint 998 or can I put a few more quid in and push for a 998FE??
In an attempt to respond to everyone and thank you all for the responses above. 998S - only about 600 were made of which 405 stayed in Europe; I’m not sure how many 996SPS there were but will check. Also 998S has the 996R engine. 749R - I hadn’t considered that as I really don’t like the 749/999 face 1198SP - that is under consideration. I have read about the weak gearboxes, mainly due I believe to the quick shifter, however, it’s extremely unlikely I would be tracking it, it’ll only be road use and I’m Captain Slow Multistrada S - always a consideration as a ‘daily’ use bike but not for this exercise. In fact there’s a nice one for sale on this very Forum. Fugley - No, even if they are very capable, not sure anyone would want to buy it in the future. An older 851/888 - a consideration but I believe it’s getting harder and harder to keep them on the road due to spares availability. An older bevel Duc - nice idea but see above. Readers please note I already have a Monster 1100S, an ST2 and a 748 although the 748 will highly likely be sold IF I buy another and the ST2 will likely be sold once it’s undergone a full resto. Man maths is definitely at work here and I’d rather look at, fettle and ride this chunk of money than look at a paper statement. Please keep the ideas coming, it’s all useful
Hmmm I do question if an FE is worth the premium asked over and above a 998S? I guess it boils down to what is and is not a limited edition? Does the existence of a plaque on the top yoke justify the several thousand £££
I have a mate over your way who was going to sell me his low mileage 1098S Tricolore about 3 years ago - the change in the exchange rate scuppered the deal but I think he has still got it He's owned it from new so only one owner - it was purchased in Ireland I think, taken with him to Brussels when his Mrs worked in the EU Parliament, then brought back to Ireland. Think it had a full 70mm Termi System on it too.
Never been a great fan of the colour, but its a one owner, good nick, "limited" run bike. Price is good compared to others I've seen, though mileage isn't fantastic. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333552477134
I could make you a very nice little plaque for the steering yoke for a lot less than that. How about number 001 of 000?
If someone wants to sell me their 916SP for that coinage, the money is sitting right here & now ready for collection.
Haha, yeah. I just meant in comparison with some of the other 996/998 stuff kicking about. I think my Foggy Rep had about 16,000 miles on when I sold it at just over 2 yrs old.
This is what he said. at least appreciated more than the 12k would have if stuck in the bank or in shares.
I did laugh at that @Symon Moore But I look at it as great news as if everything is relative, a Panigale R will be £6k, a 998R similar. I can buy another Streetfighter S for about £2.5k. Happy days. I'll not be selling anything
Sorry dude. Fat fingers while scrolling. Didn’t even noticed I’d done it until you mentioned it. Doh!
I think you need to broaden your search horizons. I am currently negotiating on a 998R in track trim and a 1098R (again in track trim) each well within your budget. Hell, I even know of a 998S mono for under 10k€ but I would only buy this to sell as everyone else would say the kms are too high at 41k. You can even take my 1098R for 15k€, I’m gonna have to collect my 1198R when this shit show is over so will need a bit of cash!
