1200 DVT What Engine Oil

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by manxxl, Oct 13, 2017.

  1. Mine got an early oil change at the last warranty yearly service not due but did it anyway. Now it's out of warranty plans to keep major services via dealer and I'll do all non specialist servicing. You're right there are other JASO rated 15W50 oils out there and not as dear as the famous brands.

  2. Just done the yearly service on mine, replaced brake/clutch fluids, engine oil and filter. Found the required specs oil in the dealer for £50 (a bit overpriced I think) called Putoline (never heard of it, have any of you used it b4?). Dealer wanted to push me another one, Mobil for £73.00!!!! saying was better in this and that. I said to him I only would take it if this "better quality" would make the change interval to double. Of course it wouldn't. Later on, found same Putoline on internet for £37.00 (Bloody dealers!). Oil filter cost me £6.00 and brake fluid another £10.00. All the rest were only checks; chain tension and lubrication, sprockets, a few bolts/screws tightening/lights/side stand sensor/etc,etc, things you normally do every few rides anyway.

Real work was removing the bloody wheel again just to rise the rear caliper to bleed. Oh well, at least double checked everything including the nut torque which is part of annual service anyway.

Notes in the book, service warning "erased" (not reset) as I've just back dated the dash one year and hopefully all ready until next service.

Brakes went noticeably sharper after new fluid and bleeding. (also used a file on the pads and break the corners).
If done in the dealer, probably I would have the bike washed as well, but then would be a very expensive wash, which I do not care much these days.

  3. My last oil change was using JASO rated Westward fully synthetic 15W50 oil £25 delivered 5L. Hiflo oil filter £6 off interweb. How was yhe rear brake bleeding? Any tips plese? Got mine right do one night this week tia

  4. Hi Bandit,

The real job was removing the rear wheel, really. Have you done it before?Once the wheel is off, need to work from the left side of the bike and undo the two screws holding the caliper. Back to the right side, undo the clips that hold ABS and fluid hose together, remove the brake caliper from disc and put in at the top of the disc. You will need to invert the position of the caliper, otherwise the hose won't let you fit in this position (I regret I didn't take photos for every step, sorry.) The bleeding then is like the other ones.

    Enjoy.

  5. Having waded through a few oil studies, I have been reluctantly convinced of the desirability of using not only fully synthetic oil but motorcycle specific fully synthetic oil, which is specifically formulated to protect engines that tend to get left idle over winter and have extra corrosion inhibitors, as well as being designed to protect gearboxes run in the same oil.
The consistent top performers seem to be Mobil and Motul.
Last time I used the beautiful cherry red Motul 7100 recommended by @nelly but this time I used Mobil 1, simply because the Halfords trade card made it such fantastic value.

  6. Small service carried out on the PS1000 last week Shell Advance Ultra 15w50 at £11.15 per litre plus the taxman:upyeah:

  7. A few keep forgetting the upgraded membership comes with a discount card for Halfords things and often pays for itself within a single purchase.

Although it has never given me discount for my ducati's lubricants needs of unicorn tears and virgins love juice
