999 What Have I Done?

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by 531AL, Feb 14, 2015.

  1. Thinking about it the ECU is more likely to be fecked than the solenoid. Anyone have a spare one I can buy? Will a 749 ECU fit my bike?

  2. 531Al,

Sorry to read about your ongoing issues. Are these guys of any use?

I would be interested on any feedback if you do use them, for future reference.

ECU Diagnosis and Repairs / Exchange Service
We can test your existing ECU for a number of hardware faults, the most common being:
    - one cylinder running (lost spark)
    - dead ECU after incorrect jump starting (blown internal connections
Where possible these faults can be fixed at a fraction of the cost of a replacement ECU.
We also provide an exchange service for damaged ECUs from our stock selection of tested ECUs.

    Off-the-Shelf ECU Sales
If you just want a replacement ECU, we can provide an off-the-shelf refurbished ECU to the model and year that you require at a fraction of the price of buying new from the dealer.

  3. Ask away...

  4. As @chrisw has already stated, reversing the voltage is the quick way to kill the ecu.
If you're lucky it will have just fused the internal connectors and you can get away with adding an additional earth through the diagnostics port to fix this.
We've fixed a lot of these, but it's not a cheap job as the work is complicated and time consuming to get into the ecu, fix and then rebuild.
The cheap route will be to get a second-hand ecu and have it reflashed with the correct map.
You may also need the ecu virginised if it's the standard map and the ecu has previously been used, but getting an 848/1098/Hypermotard ecu and reflashing that will be better as these don't use the immobiliser in the same way.

This of course is all speculation as there may well be other faults in the wiring loom or other components.

  5. Antonye, appreciated and I'll be in touch with any needs.

  6. www.aventiraceparts.co.uk Website appears to be down.
Sorry to be a bit clueless and bombard you all with questions, appreciate the help so far.
I'm trying to find an ECUs for my 999s 2003 model and there appear to be several different specs for the 999. I've got a power commander and full Termignoni system fitted so maybe I need a non standard ECU or is it a case re-mapping one to suit?

    Cheers,
    AL

  9. I expect yours, being a 2003, will have the older 59M unit which is prone to the "lost spark" fault. The later 5AM units are much more resilient as they have completely different internals but look exactly the same and are still compatible with the pin outs ... in MOST cases!

It's a common upgrade to fit a 5AM into a 999 that was running a 59M and has been done many times before.

The 5AM was also used on the 848, 1098, Hypermotard, some Monsters, SSie, Multistrada, etc. so there are plenty of them about in the second-hand market.

The best units to buy second-hand are 1098 or Hypermotard ones as these bikes don't use the immobiliser in the same way (it's in the clocks instead) so all ECUs out of these will be virgin, as in they won't have the immobiliser code set and can be used on your bike without any problems (once reflashed), and they were all 5AM versions so you can't go wrong.

As you have a Power Commander, I expect this is providing the extra fuelling needed for the full Termi system, so you would be better fitting another standard ECU otherwise you could throw the fuelling out further. You could always fit the Ducati Performance (DP) version and remove the Power Commander if you wanted to.

The cheapest way to sort your bike is to buy a second-hand 5AM ECU from a 848/1098/Hyper off ebay and then have it reflashed to an equivalent standard 999S map (software "2219DQ09", Ducati pn 28640841N is a 2005 999S UK map) and it should just plug in and go.

You will always run the risk that the ECU you're buying is already fried on ebay (and I've had ECUs in that were toast inside and beyond repair only for them to pop up on ebay a week later...!) but you should be able to pick one up for around £50 and then get it reflashed - much cheaper than £960+VAT from Ducati!!!

  10. As I understand it, a power commander is intended to piggyback onto a standard ecu. If you have a non-standard ecu that has been remapped for the Termignoni system, you would have no need for the power commander.

  11. I see, thanks antonye and Old rider. I've found a new 999 ECU for sale on here so fingers crossed that should do the job, I'm told by the seller it will work fine on my bike.

    Cheers for the advise!

  12. How about the immobiliser code that Antonye mentioned??

  13. Mm.. so does this mean I will need to get the immobiliser code set up for the new ecu? Can this be done or is it a job for the dealers?

  14. Maybe it can be done via Ducatidiag but I'm sure Antonye will tell you.
He recommended 1098 or Hypermotard ECUs to avoid the problem, as they work differently.

  15. So the question is am I better off getting a 5AM ECU re-flashed or a 999 ECU re-coded for the immobiliser? I guess either way I would have to take it to a Ducati dealer?

  16. Antonye is the guy to ask but my interpretation is that he is saying that you should get a 1098 or Hypermotard ECU for minimal fuss and just attach your power commander to it as is.
However, I have to say those engines seem pretty different to a 999 engine, so don't really understand how it would work straight out of the box as it were.

  17. As I said in post #11 I can help out with remapping a second hand ECU. It matters not what it's immo status is as this can be worked around.

  18. Have made some good progress in sourcing a used ecu. Before I plug it in and try to start the bike should I be worried about damaging the new ecu if say another electrical component was damaged by the reversed polarity?
Also, I'm trying to locate a diode on the starter solenoid. Can anyone tell me where I should be looking?

    Thanks.
    AL

  19. Found the diode it's on the solenoid cable, bike side. Not easy to find if you don't know where to look. Will soldier new one in at weekend and give the thing a try.. pray for me!! DukeDiode.jpg
