  3. Are you suggesting that you are under an obligation to accept an honour if it is offered? If you don't agree with the honours system it would be hypocritical to accept one!

  5. Your mum made me happy

  6. Isn't the honours system a way to say thankyou for contributions by individuals to "something", where "something" is in the public domain, either nationally or locally?

I have no problem with that.

We could all make a case for folks who have had awards who (we think in our opinion) do not deserve them, and vice versa.

Let the tradition continue (with appropriate scrutiny). It is one of the many things that makes our country great.

  7. Sean Connery was offered his knighthood a few times before he finally accepted.

edit- I correct myself. His first two nominations were vetoed due to his political views.

  8. Hi, bro!!!!

  9. No-one is strictly obliged to accept e.g. a Christmas present or a legacy, but it's a bit snotty to refuse - other people have gone to a great deal of trouble for your benefit, so throwing it back in their faces is not a great thing to do. And no, going along with something you don't really agree with is not what hypocrisy means. First condemning someone else for accepting one but then accepting one yourself - that would be hypocrisy.

  10. Should the refuseniks be given the honour of "cur", with a soft "c"?

  11. A bit of a relief but I'm glad you accept the point.

That's stretching things a little far. If some one has the opinion that I'm worthy of an honour I would be grateful and flattered for their opinion but it places me under no obligation to accept the honour if I don't agree with it, after all it may be from an organisation that I fundamentally disagree with.

I hear the sound of hairs splitting here but, hypocricy is generally accepted as "a situation in which someone pretends to believe something that they do not really believe, or that is the opposite of what they do or say at another time" (to quote and online dictionary) so accepting an honour that you do not believe in is hypocricy.
