Personally I don't get these modern day litre missiles. I have just as much fun on my bike and I would argue more fun than any of my mates on there R1s ZX10s and Beemers. Suppose what im saying is you don't need a modern day bike stacked with toys to enjoy yourself. Was at Cartagena in june this year and not much got past me and if they did I was all over them like a cheap suit for the rest of the session. Not bad for a 99 plate R albeit with a 999 engine but hey I love it to bits.
Cartagena's perhaps the exception as it's such a technical circuit I was there a couple of weeks ago going mid 1:40's on my zx10R. Would've I have been faster on my old 600? Probably, but at most other tracks, having an extra 70bhp is a lot of fun
I agree up to a point and again its a personal thing but for me anyone can go fast in a straight line its getting them stopped in time for the corners that's the problem. Classic example I was at cadwell a few weeks ago and a friend of mine was on a cb 500 could I catch him could I heck as like his corner speed was of the scale. Ok he races them and races well but it goes to show you don't need a litre bike to have fun. Just my two bobs worth.
You will have fun either way. It is definitely fun to have the extra power on hand for the grin factor though, especially on the Silverstone GP circuits of this world!
Yes Silverstone is a very fast track and I run out of legs just about everywhere around there. My first time there my mate took a wrong turn and got lost came back red faced with a five minute lap time:tearsofjoy: oh how we laughed.
The more I'm looking at 675's the more I'm considering them. Just worried it's going to lack the punch im after ..
There cracking little bikes mate but as you said could be a bit under powered to what your used too, maybe wait so see if there's an 800 version next year??
I don't reckon you'll find the 675 feels underpowered compared to an 899. I found my 899 a bit 'flat' compared to my old Zx6r track bike, and I was a good couple of seconds per lap at both donington and Silverstone on my 600 over the 899 A 675 is arguably a faster bike than a Zx6r Still, I'd go for a 200bhp litre bike every time just because To be honest, and it won't be popular on here, most bikes will feel great on track compared to an 899, which really isn't a good track bike, but a great road bike
A rented 899 felt better than my well set up, built for the track K51000. Light, nimble, easy to abuse. Everything the gixer wasn't!
So what do we think about chucking some fairings and some protection on the 899 then?? Get the gearing right which would make a huge difference! Always between gears at brands !
I thought about doing the same, but the 899 defintily needs : Lighter wheels - £1800 Rearsets - £400 Gearing - £200 Fairings - £500 Slipper - £800 Plus, Ducati bits are pricey for bits compared to the Japanese bikes There's a few Trioptions cup 899's up for sale at the mo, as they move to 959's from 17, so some bargains to be had
Sad to say, any Panigale without the stock road exhaust will be excluded at all MSV managed tracks as of this year, which leaves Silverstone, maybe Donnington on a noisy day and European tracks for your choice of track days. There have been some good suggestions, the Triumph 675R is awesome but my favourite would still be a 1198 with baffles. Andy
Mines on a standard can, does make you wonder about the trioptions bikes though! Possibly be hard to shift them!!
Like Andy says, it really limits your choice of tracks Silverstone days through NL are noise testing fast group only now, and at 105db at 7,500rpm, I'm guessing a standard can 899 would be close ?
Lighter wheels - £1800. You can get new from £1,500. These are nice, however I wouldn't say it needs them.... the tri-options boys use standard wheels. Rearsets - £400. OK Gearing - £200. £30 for a rear or front sprocket. Fairings - £500. OK Slipper - £800. You don't need one. Or just stick with the standard exhaust. Saves money and you can get on every track barring possibly just Castle Combe.
I'm pissed I missed out on the dp fairings that went on here recently ! Always my bloody luck! Going to put together a little shopping list for the 899 I think Anyone got any recommended gearing for 899's at brands?
Just get the suspension set for you and decent tyres and go for it! You don't need all this lightweight etc stuff, the product is pretty good anyway (anyone on here doing 1.32 around caldwell like the 899 boys?!)
