What Litre Track Bike?

Discussion in 'Trackdays & Rider Skills' started by Advikaz, Nov 10, 2016.

1. Just go down one on the front and leave it like that for everywhere, except maybe Silverstone.

2. Yeah I'm definitely going to get the suspension sorted and bung some supercorsas or something on.

The worry is always crashing it isn't it?! For that reason I'd like to get some different fairings

3. If day the wheels would've been the first thing I'd have changed on mine as they're so heavy. The tri options guys only use the standard ones as the rules say they have to
I'd concede on the other parts, but a lack of slipper clutch was a cost saving thing for Ducati, and something I felt the bike really needed. Probably why the 959 now has one
Ultimately, you could just ride the 899 bike in road trim from the factory, but where's the fun in that :)

4. C'mon, they are not that heavy! And I certainly wouldn't have super lightweight ones and use on the road. Standard ones dent easy enough!

@Advikaz try eBay for some Chinese special ones, may be worth a go and means you can leave like that on the road if you want to use the bike still there

5. They're fairly heavy in standard form, but I wasn't convinced until I rode a mates 899 with lightweight wheels and it totally transformed the bike
Still, if you're going to start spending big bucks on an 899, you may as well just buy an 1199 that has all the good stuff as standard

6. I know the Trioptions boys have to use them, but my point was they are plenty quick enough on them, so you don't NEED them. They are nice and the bike will be better, but you'll have fun regardless.

The Ducati Performance fairings unpainted are only about £450 new, and they come with light blanking plates, so you can run them with or without lights. For the sake of a trackday you wouldn't even have to paint them (a wrap may be cheaper).

7. You guys have been awesome

Cheers for all the advice

8. Exactly why I traded my 959 for a 1299s.... lighter wheels, active ohlins, better brakes.

Personally I'd buy some fairings and change the gearing and go have some fun.

Lighter wheels ARE much better. The way the 1299s turns in is so much easier than the 959. You just don't need them if you are out having fun... if you get within 5seconds of the trioptions boys you might want them, but there is plenty of fun to be had before then.

9. Not sure if it's good or shit but as said a while back I 'can' squeeze a sub 54 on my completely standard 899 on Rosso Corsas.

For some that might be guff and I know I've got a lot to improve.

My strengths are corner entry, but my lines sometimes need work and I need to learn how to square off the bend on exit, I loose loads here.

With regard to gearing, any input on a good rear size for the 899?

10. You would have to have a play. This chart gives an idea of the theoretical top speed for a number of different combinations:

As Bradders said, if you went -1 on the front it would lower your top speed to 153ish, which at brands would probably be enough for an 899 on the start/finish straight. I wouldn't want to take it much further than that.

11. -1 would still enable me to use the same chain as well which would be a result. I do feel it could do with a bit more shove off of corners

12. I went -1 on the front of my 848 and it gave it a massive boost without losing a massive amount at the top end (who really needs to be going over 160 anyway!). However, I did use a lot more fuel!

I went +1 on the rear of my 959 which gave it a small boost and barely changed the top end or fuel consumption.

13. Might go 1 up on the rear for now.

Just ordered some new grips, lock stop saver and a renthal sprocket for it

14. Never confuse NEED with WANT ;)

15. Except, a tech kit will be better than Ohlins std forks, I'd be tempted to stop there and if I was going for wheels etc then yeah agree, swap out for an 1199S and sell the 899

16. I've read that the bike needs to re learn it's gears or something after you change the gearing?

Is this true?

17. I don't thing the 899/959 have that function. The 1299 (possibly also 1198) has a learning function for new gearing/tyres.

18.
My first time there my mate took a wrong turn and got lost came back red faced with a five minute lap time:tearsofjoy: oh how we laughed.
That must be what happens to me...

19. I've read that they have to be run up on a dyno or something and 'updated'

Illegidly
