What model off 749s

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by Deco, Jan 13, 2014.

  1. Just put a single seat unit on - best of both worlds if you need to swap back for a pillion :)

  2. Didn't late 2005 749s get more power? I seem to remember a period where the 'S' had around 10hp more but it may have been when they did the facelift.

  3. Cheers Exige for all you info. Can you recomend anywhere who can supply a good quality rear cowl?

  4. I just got a carbon one off ebay for a bargain £65 - just like new too. Best keeping your eye out on there I think.

  5. I know for certain red was available in 2004 as a mate had one

  6. I had an original 749s. It was a 2005 and a biposto.

The forks you have should be gold internals which are nitride coated but are showa brand. The rear shock will also be showa.

You shouldnt be worried about the fact it was the original ( 2003 /2004 ) bike. Stunning machine. You will love it.

And they are equally as good to look at.

The s has a higher compression engine which means prob i think 7bhp extra (?). The upgraded forks, adjustable rearsets, adjustable steering rake. The throttle is probably more responsive and the engine spins up a lot quicker than the base model.

( Im no expert so stand to be corrected on the above )

    Wear well, enjoy :upyeah:

  7. My money is on an import via KJM, they went through a phase of selling these new at something silly like £4000. Reg number (PO)is Preston DVLA office so ties in with my theory.

So built 03/04 registered 05. The 749s only had Ohlins rear and gold nitrated forks over a base model

  8. I never thought that my bike was so rare. Mabe it could be an import but that doesn't bother me (or should it?)
cheers everyone for all your help and advice.

  9. Don't think S had ohlins rear.

    Base.......Sachs (+chrome fork).
S............Showa(+nitride gold forks same as 999Base).
    R............Ohlins

    All years.

  10. As opposed to a Grey one I meant - poor attempt at a joke

  11. The only 749 to get ohlins forks was the R. The later S got different cams hence a few more ponies. The bike is an earlier one but obviously registered late. Frame colour, swing arm and the earlier nose fairing are the giveaways. It has got the S adjustable footrests though so it looks like you've got a S biposto.
Drop us a pm with the last 6 numbers off your vin if you want else Glasgow will defo be able to help :)

  12. I found myself in this situation back in 2008 when I bought a second hand 05 plate 749S from a private seller. Probably like you I didn't realise at the time that by 2005 the bikes had the black swingarm and red frame. I quizzed my local Ducati dealer about it and they said, as did MrC that mine was a 2003 model that had been registered in 2005 and had most likely come from KJM. I'm not sure what the story is behind these bikes but I've seen a 2011 plate Supersport and a 59 plate 999 for sale there recently even though these bike went out of production in 2006/7. By all accounts KJM is a very respectable company so no need to worry about anything shady. As for spec over the base model, the 'S' has Showa suspension all round but has gold coloured titanium coated forks on the front (Ohlins was only on the 'R'). Also the foot pegs are adjustable, so is the seat height but only on the mono posto version not the biposto. As far as the extra power I think only the later models ie. the red framed got the extra bhp but I stand to be corrected on this. Anyway, I had mine for nearly 3 years and it was a great bike, never had a single days trouble with it. Enjoy it!!:upyeah:

  13. There was some MY04 749 bikes that were updated by the factory with the later(facelift) fairing to sell off a backlog of older models. They have the silvergrey frame. I think they did some 999 too. Only ever seen base models of these.

  14. There's a few 05 plate grey-swingarm 749's available on eBay at the moment. Including one with the grey swing arm painted black. I'm glad I decided not to do that as it doesn't look so much better.
