Why is the price "per belt" but they are only sold in pairs? Where's the logic* in that? *logic that doesn't include good reasons for being slightly misleading
Not really thought about it yet as mine had belts replaced when I bought it last year. Was just going to go with genuine/gates or whatever brand they are. Never really understood why they need changing so often! Especially when exactly the same belt will last 6 years or 70k on a poxy Renault Clio.
My My last set did a good 5 years and still looked perfect when they came out. Gates belts for a 916 are, I believe a reasonable price. Oem for a 999 are £142.00...

Worst case chosen and still dearer, especially the USA option! Savings are nearer £50 in some cases for equal if not better belts. Criticism (if that's what it was as it may not have been) for being better value for an equal if not better product I can take
@final_edition thats what I'm struggling to get my head around at the moment. Why would you need to buy any other belt when the cheapest belt will without doubt last longer than the 2 years it's going to be on the bike? If the exact fit belts are the cheapest then fair play I'll go with that. But it seems a little over engineered for something that's not offering a guaranteed longer interval between changes. I just don't see why it needs to be better/stronger if it's going to be fitted for the same amount of time as any other belt? That's not a dig at the product! I'm new to the whole belts on bikes thing so maybe I'm missing something. Or maybe after enough testing/feedback they could guarantee longer intervals?
Wasn't it Ducati with their own belts which dictates the 2 years "recommended"...I'm guessing no other manufacturer would dare say 3 years as the one time one may fail would land them in the crap. Personally I think all belts can go 3 years minimum, unless you have had the bike stood for that amount of time or any prolonged period.
I think you are spot on with that. I think it's very much a personal decision as Ducati will never take the lead and reduce the time. Personally I would and have run belts for 3 years with a low mileage. But on my Little Renault which I bought in 2005 with 10,000 miles on the clock - I missed (forgot) about the belt change at 60,000 miles. It then got to 120,000 miles when I realised I hadn't had it done and with the car now worth £1K and the belt change being tricky and £500 at the local Garage it has now done 134,000 miles with no belt change - now 10 years old - in no way meant as a direct comparison but it makes you wonder. It doesn't get any love though like my bikes I think the better the belt should give you more confidence if you wish to run longer, it would me
I fully understand, but both give the same end result especially if the 'better value option' is equal to or superior i.e. reduced running costs and better value I'm pretty sure you will estimate your own safety margin but I cannot disagree with the fact a longer recommended service life would be nice just because I am involved now, I am many things but not a hypocrite :Happy:
