996 What To Do With A Rs Engine

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by sandking11, May 5, 2024.

  1. yeah I think you are right.

I've just had a good ride out on it which resulted in a break down!

free wheeled in front of a random person's house . a woman came to the door asked if I was ok. said I'd broken down. with that the ring doorbell speaker came on. it was the woman husband and said 'should have bought a suzuki mate

end result it's mega. it's nothing like my 996 (it's stock other than light flywheel, 45mm termi cans and chip)

it revs much faster than my 748. Will lift the front off a bump in the road in 3rd gear, doesn't hit a hard limiter around 10k like my old 999s or 1098.

it feels like a much smaller CC in the way it builds rpm.

bum dyno says 140ish but we'll see. it was still pulling hard at 11500 (my 996 is dead by 10k)

gearbox doesn't feel as smooth as my 996 and no where near as good as the 748. might be a linkage adjustment needed. 1st gear is Loooooonnnnng. much clutch slip needed to get away smoothly.

fuelling (or because of the cams?) low down still isn't great. almost like it coughs slightly till 4000 rpm.

plan of action is get the fuelling right. maybe 1040 kit for a bit more mid range and bolt it into my beautiful 748. Happy days

  2. Change that gear lever linkage for the race set up, may solve your gear shifts.
This is the 748 RS sound track, peaking at 12k. You can aslo probably hear how much effort it takes to get moving.

  3. the previous owner removed the quickshifter and Dp rearsets as he couldn't get on with the raceshift pattern.

I do prefer normal shift pattern but will swap it over if I can't get it working nicely with linkage

  5. think we found the fault with the low down fuelling

amazed it ran at all! never mind it put my normal 996 to shame

just replaced the filter and all of the lines.

no leaks from the tank gasket (getting quite good at it. that's 3 tanks I've done in the last couple of months)

hopefully take it for a spin tomorrow

  6. had a good test run. fuelling is better but still not perfect. looking at the fuel line I thought I'd be picking up a stack of power across the rev range but no, it's made only a small difference. fuelling is smoother but that's all.

I got chance to ride this Rs 996 bitsa then jump onto my biposto 996, then back onto the Rs bitsa again.

except for 996 designation the 2 bikes are so different. the biposto takes forever to rev in comparison. it has really nice roll on punch in the midrange.
the stock clutch feels nicer for general riding.
stock gearbox ratios are better on the road (sounds obvious but we all think we'd like a racer on the road)

the Rs bitsa only wants to go fast.
accelerate using the midrange punch, its instantly ready for the next gear.
it reminds me of a 2 stroke. keep throwing it gears and revving the nuts off it!

the slipper clutch squeal does my head in. also the airbox induction noise isn't as nice as my 748.

Once I parked up at home I couldn't help but think in many ways the 748 was the better bike of the lot.
sure it doesn't spin its rear tyre and do crossed up wheelies but it sounds mega (especially airbox) , revs quickly, gearbox feels best of the lot, clutch not too heavy, not lumpy like the stock 996

maybe less is more after all!
