Which Desmosedici?

Discussion in 'D16 Desmosedici RR' started by Dave, Sep 9, 2012.

  1. Dave,

Good call if you have someone local who can help. As Dave says, it is VERY sensitive to setup and it took me ages to get mine sorted as no-one gives you any bloody settings to help! But they all need to be tailored to your weight anyway.

If I was to guess for you, if you are a little heavier I would try a 10.0 or 10.5 front spring then, and an 80 in the back. But the geometry is the thing that will make the most difference.

On this bike, 1mm change in ride height will transform the bike. On a 1098 range, you would change maybe 5mm at a time. Here, change 1-2mm max. So, that's 1/4 turn on the rear ride height adjuster, no more. When you go over the edge, you will feel it. Just work in 1/4 turn increments. My settings were only to help you not have to start from the very beginning! If your local Ohlins guy is good you will get the damping fine, but it's the geometry that will change the bike more than all the rest.

One click on the fork also makes a difference, you don't need to start making adjustments in large increments.

Best of luck. You will utterly love it...... the motoGP soundtrack wherever you ride never gets old either!

  2. Oh, and they will insure you Dave, they insure us all. There is almost no-one else that will so they are sort of "requested" to cover you......!

But don't ask how much if you live in London. Not sure where you are, but think of a big number and then you might be pleasantly surprised when you hear back.

Mine started with a 2*** etc.....!

  3. Thankfully I am in one of the lowest risk areas of the country, I'm in my 40s, with over twenty years riding experience, 5yrs+ no claims bonus and I don't have any points on my license at the moment. I do have a 28 day ban I got a couple of years ago though - but hopefully that wont have too much of an effect. All my other bikes are on an eBike multi-bike policy and getting a ban made zero difference to my premium there

  4. Speaking of which - are there any UK trackdays that will let you on with a GP7?

  5. They'll all let you on. It's just how long for!

  6. Ho ho ho

  7. When do you collect the D16 Dave ?

  8. Its up in Glasgow Steve, so I'm having it delivered. Not sure when yet but just as soon as I can.

  9. The Days will drag by until it arrives

  10. Well I'm due the pay-off from my business on Tuesday so once I've stumped-up the cash it is just a question of how quickly Martin can get his technicians to PDI it and get it down here. I'm just hoping that we have some good weekend weather left this year so that I can get it run-in

  11. Can't wait for tomorrow - fingers crossed, Desmosedici RR 1467 should be legally mine by the end of the day

  12. I'm not jealous one bit!

This thread will be useless without pic's and a vid of her running on youtube :upyeah:

  13. Awesome Dave, I know the feeling well and it only seems like yesterday that I was collecting mine :upyeah:

  14. Cheers Steve. Pics aplenty and video to follow asap. Full payment should be made tomorrow but I don't know when it will be delivered yet - and it might even come from Glasgow via a stop-over at JHP for set-up. Lots of phone calls to make tomorrow

  15. Great news Dave!

999R wheels are 5.5" though. So not sure sure how wide you can go with tyres.

There were a set of PVM 17" 'sedici wheels on ebay recently that went for £800

    Also a low-mile 'sedici for £30k.

  16. Thanks for the heads-up on the wheels. I will look into it.

The PVM ones on eBay sound like they were a bargain. Apparently the standard magnesium ones on the Desmosedici are £10,000K a pair if you need to replace them !!! ... so quite apart from tyre size it seems like quite a good idea to take them off, wrap them in cotton wool and replace them with cheaper replacements. I'll probably do the same with the carbon bodywork as well but I don't know anywhere that does a replacement tail unit for the GP7 exhaust so I might have to get something made up.

These scary prices remind me a bit of the old Masterati I had many years ago. I managed to crack the sump on one of the many sleeping Policemen they have round Wandsworth where I used to live. Damn car needed a new engine block, which cost over £15,000. That one sure made the insurance company gulp - they even raised the question of liability with Wandsworth Council but I don't know if they won. On another occasion I got a bad crack in my windscreen (my ex-wife took one of her high-heels to it during our divorce - I think she'd had a few drinks!) - the replacement cost over £5K and took 6 months to come from Italy!

That £30K D16RR on eBay would be about the bottom of values at the moment I reckon. There are lots for sale in the UK currently (8 or 9 of them) and all have 'low miles' but usual standards. The cheapest I found was a 4,000 miler at £34K. It'll be interesting to see what happens to values over the next few years. I'm hoping and planning that I'll want to hang-on to mine once the warranty and free servicing run out but most people seem to move them on. Time will tell.

  17. Try worldofqbcarbon.com for your tail unit, i don't know if it would be the correct one your looking for but they may be able to help if it's not . Good luck..

  18. Thanks very much - I'll do that

  19. Ducati Insurance have confirmed that they will insure me  - £1500 a year though - more than I pay for all my other bikes combined  ... another reason to thin out the garage a bit next year!

  20. Thats cheap!
