1260 Which New Chain And Sprocket Set ?

  1. How do you find the bike with the 42 tooth rear? I’m just un the process of ordering new chain and sprockets for mine. Did you fit 116 or 114 links in the end?
     
  2. I didn't go 42T on the rear, instead I went a tooth down on the front (14T), can't remember link count.

    The bike behaves so much better at lower speeds as a result and gearing makes motorway riding much smoother instead of ringing its neck in 5th or chugging at low rpm in 6th.

    If you have the full termi and upmap (or equivalent), combined with better gearing, the 1260 is king imo.

  3. All Ducati's are geared too long. Most likely to improve the fuel consumption figures on the sales brochure.

  4. I went down the same route with 14/40T, unable to find a carrier fit 42T rear sprocket to go 15/42T at the time. 14/40T works fine with the std length 114 link chain. Going 15/42T I reckon it would be 116 link.

    Very pleased with my choice of 14/40T, improves the bike yet again along with other mods.

  5. I think a drive by emissions test has a lot to do with it as well a higher gear obviously translates to a lower rpm at that given speed.

  6. On my 1200s I’ve recently installed an Esjot 42 tooth sprocket, seems like a good piece of kit. I kept the front sprocket the same as standard 15 but added 2 links to the chain length. This time I went for an Afam chain as they come well recommended. I thought it would be an interesting test as I reckon the DID chains I’ve had stretch unevenly.

    Haven’t ridden it enough yet to to report back but fingers crossed.
     
  7. -1F is significant and represents the equivalence to +3R.
    If -1F (14T) is as good as Bumpkin suggests, then everyone should at least consider changing their gearing to +2R.

  9. I don’t tend to wheelie them but I do like to open the throttle coming out of a bend. ;)
     
  10. My 1260, (haven’t got round to changing my profile pic from my old 1200 yet), has just had desmo service done and now I’m about to pull the trigger on chain and sprockets. I’m very interested in the 42 rear, but my options for this would most likely be the esjot as I can’t seem to find the black supersprox one that I really like in a 42, only a cosmetic thing I know but we like what we like hence we have a Ducati and not a Honda. I get the advantages of the 42R but there’s still a part of me that doesn’t want to mess with the original setup as I’ve managed pretty well up to now with it on all the twisty steep passes the Lake District and Scotland can throw at it.
     
  11. If black is what you're seeking for your MTS 1260, Superlight has you covered. The quick change carrier for the MTS is PCD-3 and available as a set in 40T or 42T configuration. I have a similar set on my Monster as shown below. FYI, the carrier is available in black, silver, red and gold.

  12. Wound up with a DID 530ZVM-X, JT carrier and 14/40T JT sprockets on mine. Doing well so far after about 7,500 miles at a rough guess.

    Would have preferred 15/42 but at the time that combo wasn't available.
     
  13. DID seem ok up to about 18000 miles, depending on the rider and maintenance.
     
  14. The deciding factor for me has tended to be, so far across many bikes, that the front sprocket and chain are due for renewal at around the same time, give or take. With the rear not that far behind. Just change as a set. Can't see the advantage of having a chain that outlasts the other components.

    I suppose a stretched chain will contribute to sprocket wear but with the front getting hooked what comes first, the chicken or the egg?
     
  15. I have always changed as a set. Afam lasted over 25000, sprockets had plenty of life let too. But there are few things one does to a bike that feel as nice as new C&S set.

  16. I must be a bit over enthusiastic out of the bends in the lower gears as I generally get around 10k-12k miles out of a DID ZVMX chain, by which time the front sprocket is wearing too. Rear sprocket is always pretty much perfect and will run for 30k miles so reuse that. Complete new set going on shortly though.
     
  17. Consistent with my experience on a 1200 L twin, still to see how the V4 wears. Andy
     
  18. In retrospect 18000 is the most I got from that particular DID , and agree average is around 12-14000 miles.
