Who Was The Greatest ? In Your Opinion..

Discussion in 'Racing & Bike Sport' started by Noods, Jan 10, 2016.

  1. Good call... Am I wrong in saying (not looked it up) that Sir Jack Brabham was a Kiwi too.. Both My in Laws are Kiwis. Sadly my Father in Law passed away last year, a truly great Guy, came to London for his work (daily Mirror Cartoonist) he adored Sailing and Rugby but often chatted to me about bike and car racing.. My fave Motorsport film is 'The Fastest Indian' the exploits of another great Kiwi 'Burt Monroe' what a Guy... Mum in Law flew back to NZ with half F in Laws ashes as he had requested, to be laid at his Birthplace, the other half in his fave river nearby here..
Met his son for first time back then too.. Another Amazing Guy.. If all Kiwis are like those two it must be a truly great place.. A credit to your great Country... Best wishes to you, NZ Dave... NOODS X

  4. To watch him in that williams was a joy to behold . But not a personality agreed

  5. If its personalitys were going on then it's the boys that lived the dream
Sheene & Hunt raced hard partied hard

  6. Brabham was an Aussie, Burt Munro lived here in Invercargill, the movie was filmed here, and the US, every year we have the Burt Munro Challenge | The Largest Motorcycle Rally in The Southern Hemisphere… here, well worth a visit.

  8. Very very true... I was thinking of Hunt earlier.. How brave he was trying to get that guy out of his up turned burning car ..

  9. Head or Heart not sure which way round these would be but for me sheer brilliance & domination...

    Bike - Hailwood & Rossi

    Car - Senna & Schumacher

His songs, his style, that questionable smile, will never, be taken away..

Weid or what....Major Tim Peake the first Brit is on board the ISS at the mo.. And Major Tom says goodbye to our earth today..

  12. Henry winkle on bikes? vin diesel cars or maybe Stallone in Driven? Ok I'll get my coat.

    Bikes: Rossi,
I remember watching him on 125's, 500's and now the 4 strokes.. Not saying he is the best of all time, just that he is a (similar age) was on TV (in my time). I've watched some good super bike races where riders have rubbed fairings but more in MotoGP. Foggy was doing well when I was just getting into bikes also.

I think my heart is perhaps with the road racers though, when I met Guy Martin (before all the TV programmes) he seemed genuine, I don't mind quirky people (not fussed about celb status) "Cool" guys on screen can be some of the biggest Jerks. I don't know Michael, the Dunlop Family are well known. (but not sure I'd like to spend too much time around him though)

I suspect you have to be quite strong willed / confident to race at the sharp end with all the expectation.
If you've had to work harder for it, rather than be born into it with connections and or money then I guess that has an effect also. Passionate of chip on the shoulder... I'm not a huge fan of Mansell, although I expect most drivers can be a pain.

I'm not a huge fan of modern F1 either (finely tuned athletes doing an incredible job, but it's too far removed for me, it's like a combination of playstation and pop idol rolled into one)

F1, certain drivers have had technology that far exceeds others, cars with intelligent suspension, later banned.
I rather see a driver do well in a comparable or lesser car so perhaps..

    F1 Senna,
Barely remember him racing but I've seen a fair bit since, youtube etc. If I remember correct Prost took him out in a similar way once. I guess most teams and drivers are similar, creative thinking and interpretation of the rules.

With all the camera replay stuff, unless you stick a move the risk of a recklessness enquiry is greater now. The PC brigade are everywhere. Hamilton will only ever be a manufactured plastic playboy puppet by comparison. I fear life will only get more sensible and less exciting.

That's why I think some of the best racing is lesser budget or lower (formula), although it all filters down eventually.

  13. Phil Read may have spent most of it on Rolls-Royces, failed business ventures, a big house in Oxshott, and a string of ex-wives. Fun while it lasted, but skint now as you say.

  14. The very year before at the same circuit. I can't remember which year it was, but Senna was furious at having to start on the "dirty" side of the track having won pole position, handing Prost the advantage at the start.

  16. I dunno.
Doohan was so good, he was boring. Do you remember him abandoning the supposedly superior Big Bang motor and returning to The Screamer because he found the Big Bang motor too boring and not enough of a challenge? There really was no one to touch him.
Fast Freddie winning both the 250s and 500s in one year - that is raw talent.
    And Rossi has won everything.
But then you think of Agostini, who also won everything, all the time, in an era where death was just an occupational hazard. It was before my time, really, and I don't like him much, but you can't argue with success.

  17. On Doohan. Look at how he was going in '92 until Assen. Without that injury, I think he'd had won 7 titles in a row.

Also look at '97. Astounding season. :Wideyed:
